Isn't it the done thing in your part of the world to give way at a roundabout and not pull out when other traffic is going round?

Reading the post it seems that at the point of decision to go, there was no traffic to give way too?

Unfortunately I had already started pulling out and stopping would have been dangerous. It was safe to go but then the van emerged practically on 2 wheels as if from nowhere.

I always remember Clarkson saying that it doesn't matter how fast the car is that you are driving, there will always be a white transit van tailgating in a bid to get past. Laughing (in traffic where the full speed of your car can't be deployed of course) LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

And I was beginning to think this was just an auto thing Laughing

I suffer the same 'brown trouser moments' every morning on my way to work.... goes like this:

1. Arrive normally at busy roundabout.
2. See a space and start to creep forward (hopefully reducing the brake/accelerator delay thing)
3. Stomp on the accelerator while aiming for said space
4. Wait for it ....
5. Wait a bit more
6. Lurch forward just too late to enter said space
7. Practice best sheepish grin at the car you have just been narrowly missed by (he's right next to your window now) Laughing

Turbo lag? I call it OMG lag Evil or Very Mad Cheers,

When I was taught to drive, more than a few years ago!!!!, I was told that the idea of a roundabout was to merge with the traffic on the roundabout if at all possible and to only stop if it was not possible to adjust your speed so as to merge.

That might be the case in your neck of the woods Simon, but daan saaaf we have nose to tail traffic travelling at warp speeds in all directions. Not so much merging as near colliding! If you can't stand the whiplash, stay away from the roundabouts Rolling with laughter Cheers,

Is It not just the torque reduction thing combined with a bit of lag...? Traction control would only cut in if you loose traction - and you would notice the reduction in power more. Torque reduction quashes engine power in first gear so the full 400 torques don't shear your gears when giving it some beans in first.

Have you tried pulling of in 2nd? Wink Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

'Doctor' I recall a post of yours not long after I bought my FR
re using 'Sand mode'
Around my neck of the woods we have a few 'challenging' traffic islands and if I am looking for a gap I follow YOUR advice & briefly use Sand mode- works & I feel very safe ( only a few hundred metres use)- It also 'surprise's' others that an LR can move so quickly !!!!!- does impact on MPG though!! 2011 XS,Sumatra Black, GONE MARCH 2014- RR Evoque Prestige 5 door ,MY 2014,Loire Blue, Silver Roof, Panoramic roof.

Raz - I lived in 'arlow (essex) for a year in the mid 90's - so have first hand experience of drivingh in the saaaaaf - I especially enjoyed the roundabout surrounded by roundabouts - think it was near Welling GC!!!

I ws only pointing out what I was taught long ago - don't know if they explain roundabouts the same way now!!!!! 2002 Honda VFR800

Locally known as the Magic Roundabout I believe - and there's another one down towards Basildon too! Laughing

Can someone explain the advantages of Sand Mode? I tried it this morning and didn't really find it any help Confused Second gear is the default in 'normal' mode isn't it - and you have the option of using first in 'Command Shift'. Either way the pause while you wait for the revs to rise is noticeable and Traction Control doesn't really enter the equation until you get moving.

As the good Captain said, I reckon the pause is due to a combination of Torque Reduction & Turbo Lag .... but I was wondering if there was a cunning way to override either one Whistle Cheers,
Raz

Can't be Turbo lag, the turbo doesn't come into play until just before 2000rpm and the bloody thing is still at tickover with the pedal to the floor Evil or Very Mad I know its probably less than a second but its like time standing still, but only on my part Shocked
For the same reason it can't be 'torque reduction' as it should still move immediately, there is just an inbuilt electronic throttle delay for some other reason Confused .

If you read this Alex, what's your take on it Question Is it environmental and emissions Question

Perhaps the throttle has been connected to the 'low' speed network instead of the 'high' speed one Whistle

Has it got antivirus installed on the 'network' Laughing 2002 Honda VFR800
