I recently noticed that when pressed down my clutch gives a ticking feedback that I can feel against my foot, probably in sync with the diesel engine's clatter. I'm not sure if it was there from the beginning or not, but it seems abnormal to me -- I'd expect a certain amount of vibration coming through but not the ticking. It's a new car so I'm pretty sure the clutch should otherwise be in prime condition.

Any idea what could be causing this? I am thinking of going to the dealer but wanted to first get some thoughts from elsewhere.

Forgive the newbie'ish question, but my last car was a petrol which obviously did not have anything like this, so I am not quite sure what is normal and what is not, but to my understanding the clutch shouldn't feel any different. I also don't recall experiencing it with other diesels I've test driven.

Release bearing is the most likely problem followed by DMF issues. John

The duel mass flywheel is actualy two wheels in one in a sence,designed to take out the pulse generated from the engine when running.
Basicaly to put it in simple terms,as the engine runs it produces a kind of pulsing efect with each piston stroke and the duel mass flywheel is designed to iron them out making for a much smoother ride.
If the damping spings in the duel mass flywheel have broken or are weak this you might feel on the clutch pedal as you depress it.
The realease bearing can some times whine when its on the way out but I have never heard of it creating a pulsing or ticking effect felt from the pedal.

Oops, forgot to get back on this. Thanks for the tips -- the dealer also suspected it might be the DMF. Hopefully it was just a faulty unit -- I don't want this kind of issues every 3500 km.

Just an update, had the car serviced and got it back last Thursday. Took them more than a week because they were unsure about the DMF and had to ask all the way from the manufacturer whether it needed replacing. End result: they replaced what sounded like the entire clutch assembly but left the DMF there because it was within the specs according to their discussion with LR.

Well, it's too early to tell if the problem will resurface. Certainly the situation is much improved now, although I think occasionally I can still feel a (much more dampened) ticking against my foot. But perhaps this is normal. Only thing I am worried about is if it will again get worse over time.
