I went for a trailer.

First my LR dealer said the roof racks would make the FL2 ugly (his opinion).
Second I'm not that tall, so accessing the roof box would acquire acrobatic actions Smile

Honest the roof racks deprives you from many parking lots as the FL2 is too high.

According to the German ADAC test with roofboxes most aren't fixed the right way. I once saw one flying in the front glass of a truck.

A trailer is useful if you need it very often for big loads.

If you go for a trailer don't go for the cheap ones as they will degrade after 2-3 years, if you have to leave it outside.

Mine is completely made of aluminum (Anssems 1300/250) http://anssems.be/

Take care to buy a high trailer, you won't see the small ones behind your FL2. Freelander 2 SE 4Td Izmir Blue, Dog cage for Alaskan Malamute, iphone Navigon Navigator

Hi all,

Thanks for he quick feedback, some strong cases for both. Sounds like it's worth spending it bit either way to make sure it's some reasonable kit.

I must say though, this thing looks quite neat..

I'm guessing the downside is that you cannot access the boot unless you remove it though?

I don't think my collie would approve of that; I'm not sure how long he's going to be able to cross his legs for....

Tailgate access may be ok, its possible it will hinge on the ball? No harm in asking them?

I might just add that my farm trailer, tandem axle 'indispension' is in full working order, excellent brakes and the number plate even matches the tow vehicle.

If you were in Cornwall, you'd be pulled over and you're trailer impounded within minutes for letting your trailer get into that state. I think it's three points on your licence for each working bulb on your trailer here and if it happens to be a working bulb, in the correct lamp position, then it's 6 points Shocked

Matching number plates, or in fact, any number plate at all on the trailer is considered to be a beginner's error.

Might be needing a little extra storage space. I have a tow bar already but no roof rack. Putting the expense of adding the roof rack to one side, would you go for a roof box or a trailer.? I guess the trailer can carry more and be a little more versatile, but a roof box is easier to run around with?

What do you have and why did you go that route?

Mike

This might help you decide, one way or the other, if you haven't already:

They are standard Thule roof bars, with the basic square section roof bar. I would pay the extra for the oval section bar if I were buying again.

The box is a Thule Atlantis 200 and it's absolutely brilliant! I bought it in either 2007, or 2008, when we were using a BMW MINI for our holidays and weekends away. When we sold the MINI we automatically put the roof box up for sale too and then realised what a stupid mistake we were about to make!

It's been absolutely brilliant (no wind noise, completely waterproof and secure, very little difference in mpg, unbelievably easy to mount and dismount without needing any tools, may be loaded from either side and doesn't look like c**p!). There are cheaper boxes available, but they're a false economy.

Thats excellent, as you say, paying the extra always makes sense as there is plenty of rubbish out there and Thule are very highly regarded.
Thanks for that

Tigers roof box

Hi Tigger do you still have that roof box? Im 6 months into ownership of my FL2 and im trying to decide which roof box to buy, i saw your picture and Wondered can it be adjusted so it sits further back on the roof? Yours looks to far forward compared to the landrover fitting of the OEM box. FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

Thule Boxes are not only very good but they support one of the schools taking part in the Greenpower Racing championship which help schools to encourage pupils to study all types of engineering. www.greenpower.co.uk/racing‎

Se my post on the "where did you go today"? on my trip to Aintree Race Course last Thursday where one of the school when travelling home from last years event passed a car with a Thule roof box and came up with the idea that it would make a good body for their race car.
So they contacted Thule who donated one which is now an electric race car and raced at Aintree. Obviously a top company.

Sorry I did not get the name of the school but the standard of workmanship was very good.
