It is many years ( if ever) that fuel duty was spent on road infrastructure , no more than tax on fags is spent on repairing smokers damaged lungs .

All tax goes into a big pot, we all know this, and it is spent on a variety of things.

Now, as has been said , whether they are the right amounts on the right things in a proper transprent way is open to question.

Fuel duty is just a tax and if any government decide they need more money they increase taxes in a variety of areas not just fuel. I believe that fags have gone up by over 30p but I am not hearing much complaint from that quarter

We should also remember , we have a choice , our cars are more efficient than they ever were, supposing we all had to use an early classic RR petrol at what 18mpg.

I have too many cars, none of which are fuel efficient , my choice, BUT I accept I could survive very comfortably with a couple of Mini D giving , according to my friend, around 60mpg and £25 road tax.

So maybe we need to consider our possible options regarding the vehicles we drive.

Thats the problem, with more and more cars becoming more fuel efficient people are getting more miles per gallon so to counteract this the government put the fuel price up, inreality they are not making more money, probably just balancing the books.

If the government cut fuel duty motorists would probably start using their cars more so the tax reduction would be offset by selling more fuel.

Similar story with the M6 toll, currently £5.50 to travel on it and its only at 40% capacity (at best), if they took their head out of the sand and halved the price they would get more people using it, perhaps even double so there wouldnt be any loss in revenue.

Doc - you have now used keywords that have placed you on the auto watch & listen for umpteen different government black-ops agencies. If you hear a buzzing on your telephones(s), you know why; though it's almost subliminal these days.

Do you think everyone is greedy or just the oil companies ? maybe they should stop exploring for new reserves in difficult places and then we could all run out of fuel.

then just maybe we would not have to pay anymore for fuel , not forgetting then that other taxes would rise to cover the billions the oil companies pay in corporation tax and of course the benefits to all the ex employees who are out of work.

If my car did 70mpg I would still very Censored off with paying £1.50 per litre! It's just a ridiculous ammount of money. They should not give so much money the the council house peasants and scroungers

You can't keep blaming the oil companies for making huge profits. You, like a lot of other people need to quit listening to the bullshit that you hear in the news.

Contrary to popular belief, oil companies do not make huge profits from petrol or diesel. Their profits come from other products that are manufactured from the raw material.

The government is the only "company" making huge profit from pump prises with approx 71% tax on the fuel we use. ______________________

Why make the supermarkets excempt, where I live the two supermarkets that sell fuel are both Tescos, they dictate the price here, even an independant forecourt 3 miles out of town is cheaper than out Tescos here, if I go to Watford 15 miles away all the stations are 5p a litre cheaper, the biggest seller of fuel in my locality is Tescos.

This article explains quite well how fuel is priced in the UK. We actually have very efficient refineries and distribution systems which keeps the cost of fuel production down. The average margin (not profit) was 7p/litre in 2011.

What I fail to see is if there is so little profit for the garages why do they seem to have so many refits, one forecourt near me has had four total renovations including knocking the shop down three times, new pumps, new tanks in the last fifteen years. The Shell garage at Todhills closed down the end of October and was still undergoing a major revamp last month, all new tanks gone in, it may be open now as the forecourt had been relaid but at 7p a litre they will need to shift a fair bit to get there expenditure back.

There is actually money to be made on selling the other products than fuel, that is why the majority of fuel stations look like mini marts........................ 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury Corris Grey
