Fitting Aftermarket Sat Nav FL2 Sport

Hi there,

I've read a few posts on here. My favourite being this one http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic2528.html?highlight=sat+nav but that was from 2008 and I want to do something similar but want a more up to date model of Sat Nav without breaking the bank.

As long as I can shove something into the cubby which fits as snugly as the Sony NV_83 I'll be happy.

Not overly bothered about hard wiring at this stage (first things first).

Any help, advice, etc appreciated.

Thanks Thumbs Up

p.s. the search facility brought back too many threads to read in one lifetime (I probably searched too broadly)

I suppose the Garmin 1490T would be o.k but isn't there something more recent perhaps as that too is getting pretty old nowadays? http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10895-15.html

Has anyone fitted one of these? Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT

Is this slightly different to the Garmin Nuvi 1490T?

I "think" the LMT has lifetime maps & traffic. I'm guessing they have the same dimensions.

Do you recommend taking the Garmin black surround off the front then it fits better?

I've fitted the 1490T, which had lifetime maps update when I bought it 18 months ago, pictures in my gallery. I did remove the 'shiny' surround so that the mask fitted closely to the screen. The 1490T is still current here in Australia, but stownrow's Garmin 1695 is an attractive alternative installation which eliminates the Garmin screen surround.

Stownrow, Where one could obtain the plastic cover you have between the dashboard opening and the gps unit?
Or could you send me the dimensions of the cover?

Hi egipp, that looks really neat. I've been thinking of doing this. Did you hardwire, and if so , how? Caravanners get hooked

[quote="egipp"]Hello Liberty555, as npinks says, there is a fuse box behind the glove box, the hand book pages 207/8 shows the spare circuits.
I have wired in a Garmin 1490T, which is an almost exact fit in the dashboard OE GPS location. I took the power from F5, an unused circuit which is switched on/off by the ignition. Mine actually had a 10 amp blade fuse in place; I replaced this with a 10 amp blade fuse from Jaycar which has a fly lead from it so you can connect the GPS power supply to it. I connected this to a accessory cigar lighter socket, cable tied to the bulkhead crossmember, so that the Garmin power supply plugged directly in - this is important, since you must not feed 12 volts direct to the Garmin. Other GPS makes may be different. I also put a switch in the circuit so that I don't have to have the GPS on when the ignition is on. There is a very good location inside the glovebox just behind and above the latch for this switch; it appears to be a mounting for an additional light to the glove box which is not used - at least on a 2009 SE here in Australia. Feeding the cable into the OE 'box' in the dashboard involves cutting a small hole in the base; this will be covered by the rubber mat when you remove the GPS. I should add that all the wiring is quite straightforward, there's even an easily accessible earth point on the centre console, and can be removed with no markings on the vehicle apart from the hole in the centre box which can, as I said, be covered by the original rubber mat. I should add that you need to remove the glovebox to do all this, about a 5 minute job. I also removed part of the centre console to gain access to the original GPS box for cutting the hole.
My purpose in all of this was to make it less obvious to a sneak thief that the GPS was an add on, and not to have any visible fitting points or holes when finally removing it from the vehicle. It is, too all intents and purposes, permanently in the car but can be removed for map and software updates.
Sorry about being longwinded, but hope it helps.

An A4 document folder cost about £3

This is the response i sent to another member:

The plastic bezel is constructed from the back of a portfolio ! I used a very sharp craft knife with a metal rule. I didnt have to remove the garmin glossy bit all it does is wedge between that and the freelanders trim ! I drilled a hole through the upper bit with a 25mm hole. I also had to take apart the Garmin screen mount to take out the power module. I then glued that to the gamin unit and cut a hole in the bottom part of the box so it wedged it in and help the unit stay in place.

I also go my dad to help me remove the speaker and solder on to the circuit board a wire that the runs out to the speaker grill to a maplin speaker (£4).

I purchased a new inner box from the dealer at £21 so I could cut as many holes as i needed without worrying about it. I can get the car back to stock very easily.

Power is sorted out with this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/In-Car-Mini-USB-...4ab4dd5b54

I picked the power up with a piggy back fuse into a spare number F15. This turns off after an hour so you don't have to worry bout leaving it on

Total cost £200ish! I based my idea on this kit:

http://www.caraudioexpress.co.uk/product.p...amp;page=1

Unfortunately this kit comes with a 1490 garmin which doesnt have the internet traffic and other bits the 1695 has.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

Hope this helps

Steve.

What I found with the newer Garmins, you cannot take off the black surround to make the screen flush with the surround.
Hence I'm guessing why Stownrow's sits back slightly.

Just an aesthetic thing really - hence why I bought a 1490T instead.
