I suppose the Garmin 1490T would be o.k but isn't there something more recent perhaps as that too is getting pretty old nowadays? http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10895-15.html |

I've fitted the 1490T, which had lifetime maps update when I bought it 18 months ago, pictures in my gallery. I did remove the 'shiny' surround so that the mask fitted closely to the screen. The 1490T is still current here in Australia, but stownrow's Garmin 1695 is an attractive alternative installation which eliminates the Garmin screen surround. |

Stownrow, Where one could obtain the plastic cover you have between the dashboard opening and the gps unit?

Hi egipp, that looks really neat. I've been thinking of doing this. Did you hardwire, and if so , how? Caravanners get hooked |

Looks great. I'm being a bit dumb, but what is a portfolio? How did you fix it in place? 2013 RR Evoque Pure Tech 2012 TD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey - gone |

An A4 document folder cost about £3 This is the response i sent to another member: The plastic bezel is constructed from the back of a portfolio ! I used a very sharp craft knife with a metal rule. I didnt have to remove the garmin glossy bit all it does is wedge between that and the freelanders trim ! I drilled a hole through the upper bit with a 25mm hole. I also had to take apart the Garmin screen mount to take out the power module. I then glued that to the gamin unit and cut a hole in the bottom part of the box so it wedged it in and help the unit stay in place. I also go my dad to help me remove the speaker and solder on to the circuit board a wire that the runs out to the speaker grill to a maplin speaker (£4). I purchased a new inner box from the dealer at £21 so I could cut as many holes as i needed without worrying about it. I can get the car back to stock very easily. Power is sorted out with this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/In-Car-Mini-USB-...4ab4dd5b54 I picked the power up with a piggy back fuse into a spare number F15. This turns off after an hour so you don't have to worry bout leaving it on Total cost £200ish! I based my idea on this kit: http://www.caraudioexpress.co.uk/product.p...amp;page=1 Unfortunately this kit comes with a 1490 garmin which doesnt have the internet traffic and other bits the 1695 has. Any more questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps Steve. _________________ |

What I found with the newer Garmins, you cannot take off the black surround to make the screen flush with the surround.
