From Liechtenstein to Switzerland there will probably be no stop (in fact you'll hardly notice when crossing the border), so watch out.

When you put in one of the other discs, there are a number of countries on the same disc, you will need to select the country required, I think when you put in the France disc it automatically defaults to Germany

Yeah, but as Germany never invaded CH or FL then SD4Cat won't have any problems - or will she |

Thanks all. I've been off line since Friday and found all your posts now. I can't believe i need a vignette for Austria too - this is madness - all we charge them is £1.50 to get over or under the Thames at Dartford! Even then they can avoid that.

That part of Europe is very tricky - a wrong left or right turn and you're in another country....

The motorway you are referring to is the Swiss No13 / E43 that runs north alongside the river Rhein (which forms the border between CH & FL) from Sargans to St. Margrethen (Rhein borders CH / A) and then west to St. Gallen CH. To repeat; there are no motorways in FL. If you are travelling across Europe you'd be best to invest in the road map book printed by Kümmerly + Frey titled "Euro Atlas": ISBN 978-3-259-01509-4 use that ISBN number to order it from your local book shop. It is a very handy size for carrying in the car.
As previously stated in another post - you only have to buy a Swiss vignette if you are going to use a Swiss motorway - it is CHF40 (GBP29) and will expire on 31st Jan2013. IMPORTANT: in CH motorways are signposted in GREEN and ordinary roads (no vignette) in BLUE - and - for 95% of the time the only views you get in the low lands are other vehicles. So use them only if you are pressed for time. If you wish to travel from Austria to Mulhouse FR the scenic route I'd recommend (slow but very interesting - even romantic ) would be as follows: 1) Pop into FL if you must - then leave again back to Feldkirch A without going into CH. In Feldkirch go back onto the motorway direction Bregenz and Germany. You'll bypass Bregenz via the 6.7kms Pfänder Tunnel and into Germany. 2) Jump off the German motorway (no toll or vignette required) at junction 2 for Lindau on the "Bodensee" (Lake Constance to you Brits) and follow the lakeside road B31 direction "Wasserburg" and on to Friedrichshafen where if your man digs into his wallet you can take a Zeppelin ride for a couple of hours over the lake with fantastic views of western Europe's largest lake and the Alps 3) Onwards along the lake side B31 to Meersburg, then take the car ferry across the lake to Konstanz. 4) At Konstanz (nowt worth seeing) take a small diversion (4kms) to the small island of "Insel Miainau. Stunning gardens with plants rarely seen in Europe. 5) Back on track in Konstanz cross into Switzerland - the town of Kreuzlingen and take a right (do NOT join the motorway) on the Swiss road number 13 to "Ermattingen". This road 13 follows the river Rhein and is a very beautiful route to take. Between "Steckborn and and Stein-am-Rhein there are lots of photographic opportunities - castles - river valley - boats - wildlife etc. After S-am-R stay on the 13 all the way to Schaffhausen and proceed to the city centre - do NOT go on any motorway. 6) Two small stunning diversions in Schaffhausen: Follow the sign posts for a) the IWC watch factory and take a tour, b) the Rheinfalls just outside of the city on road 4 at the very small town of "Neuhausen am Rheinfalls. Grand Okay done those - move on. 7) Leave N-am-RF on the 14 direction Swiss/German border at "Schleitheim/Stühlingen border crossing. You are now in that famous "Black Forest" delightful arboreal lined roads. At the border turn right onto the German 314 for just 2 kms to turn left onto the 315 to "Weizen > Bonndorf > Lenzkirch > Titsee" that's where you can have a black forest gateaux on the shores of the prettiest black forest lake. 9) Titisee B31 direct to Freiburg and its medieval city centre. 10) Freiburg german motorway 5 - J62 and run down south (direction CH and Basle) to J66 to cross the Rhein into France and Mulhouse. If your man doesn't take you on that route he doesn't love you enough. In which case send me a PM
If you insist on wasting time in FL then drive up to their very small ski resort of Malbun. You will see the roads sign from the capital Vaduz. Cannot miss it - only one road that hairpins up from the valley to a height of 5,244ft a.s.l. And take care at the traffic light controlled tunnel 2/3rds the way there - some of the locals enjoy coming through on red, especially after they've had a drink at night Check here for driving information and tariffs for Austria. You can buy their 10 day vignette €8 or their 2 month vignette €23.40: http://www.asfinag.at/toll-stickers-and-rates (Austrian Motorway Vignette Charges) http://www.asfinag.at/toll-stickers-and-rates (General Information & Rules - Driving in Austria etc.) Right now your on your own, or ask a Swede, Turnip, Carrot or a Chicken Farmer - they're all on FreeL2. Happy Holiday |

I bought a Swiss vignette on two occasions in advance from the Swiss embassy in London over the phone. Neither time did it appear on my credit card bill.....result! I filled up with diesel, baguettes, cheese etc. in France drove through CH stopping at the top of the St Gottard pass for picnic lunch then cruised down into Italy without spending any dosh in CH! Bless you Athelstan - you've clearly taken a lot of time to compose that message so the least we can do is follow your route (time allowing). I do want to go into Liechtenstein - just to say I have been there - but won't be long - maybe perfect place for a 'comfort break'
