steering problems

First of all id like to say hi to all fellow fl2 owners and start off my first post with a big problem, i recently purchased a used fl2 se in black, its a 57 plate with 50,000 miles on it ive had it a week and just yesterday the dreaded steering problem reared its ugly head, just had it undersealed a few days ago as i plan on keeping it for a while, was diving up to local supermarket when i heard a terrible whining noise then the steering was going heavy on cornering, ive got 12months warranty with the car so was just wondering if im likely to get this done under warranty

Hi and welcome, sorry to hear your having problems. first off have you purhased the car from a Land Rover garage? If so then they will know all about the steering problem.
If not then Im sure we can supply you with the informantion that you need. There has been many cases where the original power steering rack has not been cleaned properly ans swarf has been left inside the rack, this has lead to the rack failing.
What usualy causes the load whining noise/ viberation while driving is that the power steering resivour filter cloggs up and puts a huge strain on the pump.
A simple test: With engine running unscrew the power steering fluid cap and look inside, you should see a steady flow of oil in a dome shape. If there is a lot of bubles and looks like a vocano going off then the filter is blocked.
If caught early enough then a new oil resivour and system flush is needed. I personaly think that along with the oil resivour being changed the rack and pump should also be replaced.
I had my system flushed with a new oil resivour being fitted, Now out of warranty the rack has now failed along with the power steering pump. I still think that the damage was caused to the rack and pump but these items have now failed because of it.
If you get your system flushed and all seems fine, while your driving listen out for a whine"speed related" afterwards, if so the perhapes your pump will be damaged and it will only be a matter of time before that totaly fails too. Ive since purchased a new rack, pump, oil resivour and oil,as its a big job to replace all of these im now waiting to my holiday arrives then me and a mate "who is a machanic will carry out the work saving over £800 in labour alone.
There is a bulitin about the power steering on the Topex website stating the repair proceedure, good look mate and let us know Thumbs Up

Not sure if your warranty is from LR, but i would call in and have a word with the chaps at Team Valley, great team of guys and very helpful, they should be able to advise

Yer I thought that was fairly cheap but then LR want a whole lot more, I know they have overheads but so do all the independants but thier fees seems to be half LR fees which I feel is a total rip off, let us know how it goes

Thanks for the reply guys, done what you said and it is like a volcano going off in there, whining like a b*tch to, the garage i bought the car have told me to ring back on monday and they will get the part ordered and book me in, im hoping this is going to be done under warranty as ive only had it a week, do i need them to change the pump, and reservoir as i have a feeling they will want to do as little as possible, also do you think that getting the car undersealed could have brought this fault on or is it probably just a massive coincidence??

Just like to add a big thanks to freedieselauto for the link you put up very helpful!!

do you think that ill need a new pump and rack and reservoir though??

Having a car undersealed, although it should not be necessary with a modern car I dont think, should not have anything to do with or affect the steering components and should certainly not have got into the hydraulics/filter.

I see NO reason why you wont get it done under warranty but as with all warranties they will do as little as possible, this means they will probably just change the blocked oil resivour and flush the system. A recon rack, and pump would set you back almost £500 with the VAT but new parts your looking at £700 + then theres the labour.
To change the rack the whole front subframe has to be lowered and a good few parts removed and disconnected for access, I know as im about to renew mine. Big Cry

Well seems like the garage is gonna foot the bill, (so they should) think it will be just be a new pump/reservoir, hopefully will be sorted soon If you read this (toeknee) spoke to the lads at team valley land rover and got a worst case scenario price off them, rack/pump/reservoir/wheels realigned etc £800.00 didnt think this was too bad would rather not have to fork this out from my own pocket but at least i know ill get a decent job done, thanks for all the help and ill keep you updated, oh by the way it my first freelander 2 and i love the thing. Cheers

Well i said id keep you updated on the steering problem so here it is:

Garage has fitted new pump ( Under warranty only had the car a week) and i fitted new reservoir and new fluid seems the problem is sorted only i now have two new problems, was out with the misses and daughter yesterday when i noticed the revs were sticking they were jumping ahead of the speed of the engine if this makes sense, and the dropping back down, possible clutch slipping ???? then after i noticed that i got a information warning REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE i am hoping that the fitting of the new pump on Friday and this is linked, the garage had obviously steam cleaned the engine bay due to the spilled fluid from the pump so is it possible that the two are connected, i called out the AA who plugged his diagnostic in and it didnt pick up and fault not sure if this is a bad thing or not, he also took the car for a test drive and said the clutch seemed heavy and was slipping slightly, never noticed this until Friday night after i picked car up from getting new pump fitted, AA patrol followed me back up to garage where i bought car, told the so called mechanic the problems and showed him the AA report, said they will get to work on it first thing on Monday, as i said it is my first Freelander 2 and i dont want to lose faith in the car as i love the thing, being a shooting/fishing man it is ideal for that, and also running the kids around the countryside, i feel like taking it to team valley land rover and paying out my own pocket to get the job done properly once and for all but why the hell should i, at the moment i could Big Cry ill keep you updated on whats happening.

Its hard to say at this stage but as you have just bought the car then they should put any problems right for you under their warranty. I would however make a note of anything you feel is going wrong with the car "Time / date it, keep a record of it and report it to the garage and if its still not corrected then keep going back to them untill you are satisfied. Its always a good idea to keep your own records for future reference Thumbs Up
