Have decided on the Witter detachable flange towbar. Thanks to everyone who replied to that thread.
I now need to decide between the dedicated or non-dedicated 13 pin wiring.
Does anyone know exactly what the dedicated wiring does over the non dedicated.

The fitted price is about £190 more for the dedicated (£600 total) and aparently still requires dealer programming.
I have looked at the fitting instructions from PFJones for the dedicated and think i could do it myself. Has anyone else fitted thier own if so any problems. However PFJones have told me that the electrics will not work at all until it has been dealer programmed.

My car is a 56 plate so no LR warranty issues and want to keep it cost relative.

I have fitted mine with dedicated electrics - bought on E bay and then paid the dealer £57 to turn them on - piece of cake

i just fitted a Witter detachable flange towbar with 7 pin electrics all came from PFJones so not genuine electrics but all connections plugged right in same as genuine parts, still needs connected to a computer to active what ever they do, just follow the instructions and every thing will be fine 1995 P38 now dead

The 'dedicated' harness plugs directly into the Freelander wiring loom that has the dedicated sockets to accept it, this can be LR genuine or towbar manufacturer specific, either one is 'dedicated' to work over the 'canbus'.
This gives you 'bulb failure' warning, dedicated flash icon in the instrument display and turns off reverse sensors when hitched up. Programming can be done by towbar fitters or LR.

The cheaper option uses a bypass relay and cannot be directly plugged into the Freelander loom, a sounder/buzzer is installed for audible indicator warning, reverse sensors may sense the trailer when hitched. Also for any Freelanders in warranty a service department will frown upon this if you have an electrical fault of any description.

Once the dedicated is programmed or coded, does it have any effect on Stability control, hill start control, throttle response or any other function not already mentioned?

Only one I know of and that's for an 'Auto' box, it's the 'Uphill and Trailer Mode' that is detected by the plugging in of a trailer and various other sensors. This changes the shifts to try and keep the driving within the optimum torque band.

manchester tow bars fitted mine i had a choice of l/rover interface box at a extra cost of 90.00 or a none l/rover one wich i chose i have never had to take it to the dealer for programming they said it would work out of the box give them a ring for advice the only thing mine does is the reverse sensors activate when i have a trailer attached i just swich them off on the dash  rainy-city

Remember, not all Freelander models have the facility to switch the sensors off on the dash.

Just a quick update. Have now fitted the Witter detachable flange towbar and dedicated 13pin wiring harness from PFJones. The wiring harness was very easy to fit with no problems at all, just plugs into original loom socket.
It did state that it requires coding/reprogramming before it will work. But i can confirm that i have have tried it with my Thule bike rack without reprogramming and all the lights lights work ok. Better still the dash waring light works when you indicate and the cars fog light is cancelled.
However the rear sensors are still active but i have the dash button so i can live with that.
Have saved myself £250 plus programming cost
