A lot of mixed messages here im begining to wonder if its the right car for me. If you look on Towcar.info not a single person has anything bad to say.
Its good to here from higher mileage owners as well.
Perhaps someone should start a How many miles has yours done poll.

Had thought about the manual auto choice after reading about the clutch problems and this is my biggest concern.
Never had an auto but like the idea of no clutch but dont like lower MPG or acceleration, not that im planning to boot it about. Another problem is all my other cars ar manual so i can see problems switching between them.
My caravan is only 1250kg so it wont be on its limit.
A car this age will be out of manufactures warranty. I will try and get some kind of generic warranty if buying from a dealer. I have read on other posts that aftermarket clutches seem to be lasting longer.
The other decision is wether to buy a FL2 with a towbar already fitted and used for towing. Chances are if the cluch was going to go it would have already been replaced.

Just for info the auto box is brilliant, and clever so it can not be abused in the same way that a manual can, I towed our beemer up a hill with a hill start ,in the snow , with no probs so a caravan would be childs play. ref acceleration it's a Freelander not a Porsche but the Command Shift mode on the auto will let you manual shift faster than a manual box, you would be surprised what you can leave at the lights using that mode Very Happy 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

I may be somewhat biased but I have owned 2 Freelander 2 manuals and have extensive knowledge of 2 Freelander 2 autos which get some pretty heavy offroad use and have to say that all 4 are very reliable and probably the most reliable of all the current LR/RR range. There will always be problems with any complex mechanical vehicle and to those affected they are a serious pain in the neck, but in my opinion there are no more with the Freelander than any comparable vehicle.

I bought my 08 manual at 3 years old/75k and with a tow bar fitted already. It had full LRSH, used as a leased company car by a company owner selling upmarket conservatories. It was clear it had been a motorway mile muncher. Single socket towing electrics revealed it had only towed a trailer, not a caravan. LR records confirm the clutch is original. It certainly does not reveal its high miles when driving. I tow a 1450kg caravan with no problem. Thumbs Up 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

You must remember there are 3980 members on this forum, if 20 (I am guessing) have had gearbox problems, then possibly 3,960 haven't, you won't get people posting saying "Hi, no problems with anything this week", otherwise it would be boring.
I had a seized brake caliper on my 09 model, but that doesn't mean they all will when they get 3 years old.
Test drive one, then you will know. 09 FL2 HSE auto Lago Grey

I have changed the tailgate switch (£20) and
replaced both Anti-Roll drop links (£23) as the rubber was worn through.

"Hi, no problems with anything this week" Mr. Green

3 years of virtually fault free running - changed delaminated rear pads and tailgate switch and that's it...

2007 SE - 55K miles done including long trips up and down the Alps

Only MAJOR concern is the rear wiper - the blade squeaks on first wipe Laughing

I'm going to buy another two ! One for my wife - auto box and a newer replacement for mine in a year or so's time.

My neighbour works for Landrover and only advises the FL2 - they don't tend to come back into the workshop unlike all the other Landy's which do and cost ££££ to repair (Maybe Evoque will do good though). I do fancy a LR3/4, but as he says if you have money to burn then go for it.

Hi i really want to buy my first freelander 2 with a £10k-£15k budget.
A lot of 2007 models for sale seem to be 70K-100k or more. I know diesels last longer but are they getting expensive to maintain and run at this mileage.
Also would it be preferable to choose a 50k GS or a 90k SE for similar money.
I know im not going to be popular for saying this but i want to tow a medium size caravan and use a Maxxraxx bike rack at the same time. Then have a decent family car when not towing.

my 2 penny worth.

I purchased my 56plate manual SE with 20k on the clock in December 2009 from Landrover Lewes
It now has 52,000 on the clock- no major issues, and running like a dream, averaging 35+ mpg

below , in some sort of time order of purchase

I have spent / purchased

£250 Purchased Rear entertainment system - 2 screens for the kids
£350 Purchased Roof rails, fitted by landrover
£40 Purchased roof bars - from flea bay
£60 Purchased LR cycle mount for tow bar from flea bay
£390 Purchased 4 new tyres
£239 Service & MOT ( huge opening offers discount from halfords motor centres). december 2010
£30 Replaced 2 sets of wiper blades ( i buy new every year)
£5 Purchased PTFE lubrication for gear change linkage
£45 Purchased Filter and oil change
£25 Purchased upgraded headlight bulbs
£15 Purchased updated sat nav discs
£250 Service & MOT Halfords again december 2011
£15 Purchased upgraded LED light bulbs for interior and boot area.
£440 Purchased Wintrac winter tyres, and sold previous tyres

think that is all

It is due rear brake discs very soon Sad
Now looking to buy a newer one. I hope it will be as reliable as this .........

that's a good price for a service and mot from Halfords pcheaven, were you happy with the work/service ?

and were you not tempted to go back to the main dealer for a service and mot ?

I paid not much more from a main dealer for a major service and I at least know I have a stamp in the book. Well worth the extra 50notes!!

Just need to shop around a bit and there are bargains to be had!! Besides, not sure I would trust halfrauds mechanics?? Shocked Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

yes - very happy. they adjusted the headlights, tightened a track rod end, and replace a rear light bulb all for free. finished on time, even let me provide my own oil as mine was £5 cheaper!
would never consider a main agent when car is out of warranty.

yes that would seem to be about the norm for a dealer.
