Can it be changed to take into account the horrid autos I have driven vs the far superior faultless manual I own?

Rolling with laughter

Seriously, best just stick to Sir CG's original poll. We could be here all day with possible variations. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Don't get me wrong the FR2 is sooooo much better, and suited with an Auto box.
I just wish mine wasn't AutoBorked !

The difference is, some of us were into three years of ownership before you bought one, hence some of have had both.

As much as I feel that the FL2, as a heavy car / workhorse / tow car, is of course suited to a auto box, I must admit to a feeling of dissapointment / grave concern when I found out that the manuafacturer was not ZF. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

You credit the germans too much...
Many mechanical wonders were made by japanese. Give them also a little credit.
Their progress in auto transmission was somehow slowed down by the fact that americans, after the war, have patented every piece of mechanical engineering concerning autoboxes.
And to ease a little your concerns, the same producer of FL2 autoboxes (Aisin AW) had also made the boxes used on many Audi and VW cars. Even BMW had used it (the box) on its Mini.

Also the below is an interesting read:

i agree the fl2 with the auto box is a very nice drive but what worried me was is the box reliable enough to justify the extra cost that l/rover charge i think when i bought mine it was in the region of 1K more than the manual however if the box failes prematurely the repair cost is horrendous ur looking at 3.5k as posted on this sight as opposed to 1k for a clutch replacement, after all some auto boxes have started to fail at 50k is very poor when you consider that there will be no driver abuse as apart from selecting drive/ rev the box does the rest Big Cry

my second question is when you buy a replacement auto box of land rover are you getting a brand new box or a re-con Question

i can only suspect that like other major components on a car these g/box units will be exchange and thus are returned to the factory to be reconditioned so are you being sold new or re-con Question and are the dealers telling new when its not Question have you ever asked Question would you want to know Question rainy-city

facts

It's tough that any gearboxes fail prematurely, but the facts are that FL2auto boxes ARE very reliable, only a few have failed according to members here. The auto box perfectly suited to the FL2 and well worth the extra cost! Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Ok, thanks Alex. Nobody on here commands my respect for technical prowess more than you and so I will rest a little easier now even though my last ZF auto went to 126 K miles without a problem !! Maybe the chances of an auto box failing are about the same as the chances of a manual box failing and so, when the clutch and DMF are factored in, is is invetible that manual cars will have more problems - as evidenced by the current scores in the yorkshire chicken-slaughterer's poll ! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
