Warranties

I receieved a letter today from Land Rover informing me that in April our Freelander will
be three years old and out of warranty.....

Twelve months warranty £585 and with Land Rover Assist £695...........WOW....

It's times like this that the warranties offered by Hyundia and KIA start to appeal.

Why can't Land Rover offer a better warranty, is the product not up to it Question

If landrover offered a long term warranty like kia or a 100,000 mile or life of the car like vauxhall do now then I think they would go bust in a very short time. land rovers are not the most reliable cars as I have found out time and time again. Ive never had any other make that has let me down so many times in a few short years.
I wish they could be more reliable than they are but I just seem to love them even thought my wallet has a huge hole in it.Must be a sucker for punishment lol Laughing

Scotland 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 Dynamic Auto Indus Silver

If it helps your decision making in any way, our SE is now 5 years old. We have renewed the warranty yearly since the LR warranty expired and about to do so again. A new suspension rod, new Traction Control Module, new sunroof (or parts) to stop the roof rattle have all been paid by the warranty co. The TCM alone cost more than the cost of the warranty, so all in all, we are quids in each year. Glad we kept it going.
Fortunately, we have been lucky with this one that very few faults have occurred. But, it does receive a lot of TLC in the cleaning department (missus, not me). Out with the old (2007 SE)
In with the new (2012 Dynamic with everything). Now also gone.

It really depends on what your car is like? Lots of warranties promise you the earth but never deliver when you want to claim... The select warranty from land rover doesn't cover all the things that your previous warranty did..

The standard warranty on the Land Rover is very good by mainstream standards. A great many manufacturers run to 3 years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes sooner). The Land Rover warranty is 3 years, unlimited mileage. Even manufacturers like VW, Skoda and Honda will limit their warranties to 60,000 miles. This is important to me as my contract hire is for 3 years and I will achieve 90-100,000 miles in that time. Incidentally, the first 7 1/2 months and 23,000 miles have been completely without fault, not bad for a manufacturer that many people love to pan.

The likes of Kia offer very long warranties, not because their cars are especially reliable, but because they cost a lot less to build and the margin is there for them to pay for the warranty cover for future years; that is if one of the numerous warranty exclusions doesn't catch you out first! Vauxhall's "Lifetime" warranty has more exclusions than Monty Python's "No claim" insurance policy Rolling Eyes

Land Rover's own extended warranty will be a lot more expensive than going to, say, Warranty Direct, but either is only a mechanical breakdown insurance (rather than a full warranty) and my own experience of WD has been very poor when it comes to claiming. I wouldn't go with them again.

Because they would prefer you to buy a new one I think?
I remember back in the 70's when warranty was only 12 months and no options to extend beyond that. I used to get a letter from the dealer after 10 months recommending I buy a new one, before things started to go wrong and cost money they said, so whats new? Rolling Eyes

+1 for Tigger.
The warranty has little to do with car, it's more about market domination, do things the competition can't/won't and accept the consequences.
Keep the factories producing massive numbers and if one goes wrong...change it Thumbs Up

If you do need the extended warranty the LR one should be hassle free. Just had one of the horns replaced on mine - dealer noticed it and said did I want to do it as the part was cheap but the labour would be expensive. Went home, thought about it, read the warranty booklet Idea - then phoned back and said surely it's covered by the warranty. Slap forehead noise from dealer and hey presto, nice new horn fitted free.
I agree, LRs aren't the most reliable of cars, and if something big goes it'll be expensive. I've just renewed mine.

Be very very careful about extended warrantees, took one out on my Kia Sorento only to find it does not cover electrical faults.

My strong advice is to put your money (a fixed amount) into savings instead each week

You read about stories on here, some have justified grievances, some just don't want to put their hands in their pocket and try to camouflage it with SOG Acts. I despair!

Don't want to get in to a heated debate here, although it could be quite easy to do that.

Do I detect a hint of contradiction in your statement? I thought the Sale of Goods act was good thing.. especially, when "some have justified grievances" which manufacturers will not address at all, or at best will only accept a limited liability. Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!
