There has been some discussion about this. It revolves around the fact these boxes are "sealed for life/maintenance free" for 150k miles. Under the statement they shouldn't fail early

Q059 for the replacement of the auto box in Eastern European boxes shows only top up ATF is required and also one supplier of the box (LR034030) says it is prefilled and only requires a top up when fitted. I need to get the official LR statement on this as I was charged £230 for filling my replacement gearbox with ATF!

Sealed for the life of the box. Therefore, if fluid degradation causes the failure of the box they can say that the fluid was good for the life of the box !! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green Evoque SD4 Auto Blue. FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone. RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone |

Does Sealed for life tell me that the box when delivered to the LR dealer is filled with ATF? |

Ive never known a replacement box come filled with lubricant, as yet, and if it was and its delivered by the couriers it will arrive upside down and the fluid will be coating the back floor of the van. Also the fluid would add to the delivery weights and costs, its so much easier to deliver then tell you to go and get some to put in. |

I wonder why in Q059 they only allow the fitting garage to claim only for top up ATF. |

has anybody thought of emailing l/rover or the dealer and asked how long the g/box should last after all these units must be tested by l/rover quality assurance from there supplier and do we know what other vehicles these boxes are fitted to and has that car maker had any premature failures, may be worth a close look for you guys where the g box has failed rainy-city

If the issue is oil degredation, and the 150k service interval is too long. Has anyone actually changed the oil in their auto box?? Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass |

BMW gearboxes are sealed for life BUT there seems to be a trend by those that know ( mainly independents ) to change the oil and filter at around 80k. The parts are available so I suspect they are also available for LR models! Has anybody asked ?? |
