I think you will find that it is when the car is moving over a certain speed...can't remember which speed but not very fast.

Also, if you unlock the car and don't open a door within one minute it will auto lock again. John

I know the doors lock at around 5mph forward or revese but what I should have said, when the car is parked.some times it does lock after a minute as you described but other times it never does. Thumbs Up

As long as the car was locked and you then unlock it, but dont touch any of the doors it should relock again.

so what about this scenario?

You get out of the car and as you walk away you press the unlock button instead of the lock button.

does it:

a) do nothing
b) wait for 30seconds and then lock itself

This is what LR refer to as "Drive Away Locking" when the vehicle is in motion. Note "motion", so in theory not only does it work in forward and reverse gears it should work if when, you are parked, an avalanche suddenly shoves you sideways tumbling vertically down a mountain Shocked

DAL is configured at the factory to activate at circa 12kph (approximately 7.5mph) or it can be programmed by a LR dealer.

As JST reported, there is also another unlock/lock feature; this is LR's "Auto Relock" which relates to the situation where the driver has pressed the unlock button on the remote (or on the centre console switch) and then does not open any door or the tailgate. It is so configured that after 1min of inaction it will automatically re-lock all the doors and tailgate.

With reference to Simon's scenario of what will happen depends on which "Single or Multi Point Entry" unlocking status your vehicle is programmed to. If your FL2 is set to "Single" (unlocks only the Driver's door and fuel filler flap) and you do as Simon proposes - press the unlock again by mistake, that action will unlock the remaining doors and tailgate. If your vehicle's unlock status is "Multi" (unlocks all doors, fuel filler flap and the tailgate) and you accidentally press the unlock button again the status of your vehicle's unlocking will not be be altered. In both "Single or Multi Point Entry" the car's alarm is deactivated.

To finish - the multiple variables (what can and cannot be done) that are programable for locking/unlocking, and arming/disarming the alarm (and the process to change their current settings) via the remote or the centre console switches are discussed and illustrated fully in the Owner's Manual in the chapters "Keys & Remote Controls - Locks - Alarm". In our manual that's 7 pages and so cannot be covered comprehensively in this post - but I trust the above helps.

Locking of the doors after moving off is not only determined by speed. The system also needs confirmation that someone is in control of the vehicle by an input on the accelerator pedal, i.e. if you roll away down a hill without needing any throttle, going up through the gears, the doors will stay unlocked (could be handy if you were sitting in the back when the car accidentally rolled away and you need to bale out quickly!). As soon as the driver presses the accelerator, and in my experience you can be doing 40mph or more, the doors will lock. This explains why the locking sometimes seems random - it is tied to the first press of the accelerator pedal once over the minimum speed. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!
