Snow & Ice Mode

With the snow soon to arrive a work colleague asked me what changes when you turn the traction control to the snow & ice settting. I said that in normal mode power in split 70-30 (front to back) but in snow setting power is split equally 50-50. Am i right? didnt want to sound like a fool so had to say something - he accepted my explanation, just wondering if i was right thouugh.. Embarassed

I think the ratios may be out a little, in standard mode I believe it can be 50:50 from start off up to 90:10 at speed and varied according to need in between.

GGS mode changes the ratios, biased more to 50:50 but, again variable as needed.
The throttle response is damped, quite markedly, the shift pattern in an auto will change too.
The traction control is adjusted and will activate at very low wheel slip angles, preventing them from spinning.j

Someone Whistle once mentioned small primates acting within the wheels, the RRS is more advanced requiring just a single larger primate Laughing

Hicksy, I feel the steering changes too, although the TR, by all accounts doesn't change it, it may be the sensation caused with more power going through the front wheels increasing the load thus making the steering slightly heavier?

No speed restrictions in any mode as far as I know. Using the snow setting not only adjusts the torque split, it also uses a faster rate monitoring the wheels, it softens the throttle response (longer pedal movement required to get the same engine torque response, it also changes the ABS strategy to allow a bit more locking time on the wheels (allowing a small wall of snow/gravel to build up in front of the locked tyre.
Torque splits F/R are:
Normal 90/10
Grass. gravel, snow 60/40
Mud & ruts 50/50
Sand 50/50

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

The EMS is remapped to provide more gradual torque delivery for given accelerator pedal travel to reduce the risk of wheel spin. Automatic gearbox will change up early to minimise loss of traction.
Electonic Centre Coupling remapped to a low torgue setting with some pre-loading to transfer torque to the wheels with traction promptly. Remains closed until higher speeds are reached.
Hill Descent Control is off unless manually selected.
Traction Control is highly sensitive to slip.

Really? From standstill I would have thought the opposite, then transferred forward as the speed increases, becoming 90:10 front/rear once at speed?

When in GGS throttle response is reduced, get used to this before you get too confident as you need to drive round corners and it is quite easy not to apply enough throttle.

Had a play on quiet roads earlier, GGS is certainly well damped although it holds onto gears for a long while, agree with corners though, have to have your wits about you.

CG, yes your right Rolling Eyes the steering still feels different though, maybe just a perception.
