2011 SD4 Auto. I seem to be getting arround 32mpg, but on sone days the same route gives me 35. I have had two loans cars recently, both sd4 autos and both of these seemed more economical, given at least 35.
I also noticed my Average MPG seems to take much longer to climb into the 30's than the loan cars.
I did ask the garage to look at this while it was in and they came back with no faults found. I do not know if mine is acually worse for fuel consumption or the computer is not as acurate.

How do you drive your car and have you had it from new? The loan cars might be a bit more frugal as the chances are they were probably never 'run in' and so they are much looser.

Also I find air con on makes a big difference - could the loaners have had it turned off? Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Is there any concencus on how many miles it takes for the diesel to "loosen up" so that MPG improves? I can't get close to the documented MPG figures on the SD4 on long trips where fuel economy is more important. I've now done 11,000 Klm or 6,600 miles.

Here's the thing, i left for work at 05.30 so no traffic and got 32mpg, I came home at 15.30, although there were no hold ups there was obviously more traffic, I got nealy 36mpg. same route just in reverse.

Thing is you will always use more diesel in a cold engine. Although the engine will be cold for your journey home there would still be some residual heat left in the block which means that it will warm up quicker.

As for when an engine loosens up - I would say between 10k and 15k miles, although it depends on how you drive it Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Just measured MPG brim full to brim full on my manual TD4 ,3 weeks old. got 34.2mpg on a mix of town and motorway not bad, driving with a light foot mostly on motorway and a roads manged 43mpg according to the trip. As I used to only get 38 on my Audi A4 its better than I thought. Smile

I get 27mpg when towing the caravan at a steady 55mph, and 31mpg when on the motorway at a steady **mph.. Round town about 28mpg! 40.000 miles on the clock and it is Auto. Far better mpg than the Discovery. 1998 300TDi Auto Disco, never to be forgotten.

You've probably covered this somewhere but is it worth having a re-map? I had a P38 Range Rover chipped from new, had it for 13 years, and was well pleased, never a problem, and 34 mpg on a long run. With my near new TD4 manual I get about 34mpg rising to 38mpg on a run of over 20 miles. Thanks.

Can quite easily get 40 mpg on runs on quiet A roads (north of Scotland), but that does involve a light right foot for acceleration and anticipation to reduce braking. Normal use though (mostly short journeys A/town) returns 33mpg average.
