This time I do have a question to the electronic experts of this forum:
I have been intrigued by the reports on the exchange of the normal sofitte-lamps against LED-sofittes.
So I have got them (6 white wide angle LEDs) and fitted them without problem - BUT: the 6 LED's do not completely switch-off, a slight glimming remains after the auto-dimming function. Is this normal and without danger to my battery?

Please advise.

Thanks

YF

Off should be off whether they be LED's or standard filament type bulbs.

Are you sure that the glow you see is not just the LED itself? Many of them look like they are on slightly when they are actually off, due to the reflection through the lens.....

If they really do not switch off fully then I would think there is a fault in your system.

Just a quick update:
you are aware that our Freely 2 can be locked two ways:
-one time press of the FOB, the alarm is in stand-by mode and the doors may be opened from the inside.
-two time press of the FOB, the alarm is activated and the doors cannot be opened from inside, and the electronic is put in "sleep" modus. This will also cut the power to the interieur-lighting, and the LED-Sofittes stopp glimming after a few minutes.

So my previously expressed concern about battery-kill is obsolete.

yamaha-fan.

I think you should check your handbook about the alarm settings as several of the things you have just written are not correct according to my Handbook. In the English version, it is on page 45.

It is too complicated to rewrite here, but one item, not fully explained in the handbook is as follows.

Some while ago I contacted LR Technical. They told me via email that the electronics are always 'put to sleep' whether it is one push of the button or two pushes.

However, if you use the Tailgate Release button, this allows the tailgate to be opened without 'waking up' the electronics - usefull for those of us that need to leave the tailgate open for long periods, eg on a camping site.

With the electronics awake we are drawing about one and a half amps. This is why there have been so many flat battery reports after the vehicles have been left for a long time (several days) without setting the alarm.

Hi YF.

Sleep easy. The battery will be fine in the morning.

I have had LED's fitted for boot and all roof interior lights and the glow you see is normal. Going back to my University days I guess its because LED's can actually glow on a very low current draw, and incandescant lamps cannot. The LEDs are glowing on the small amounts of residual 'juice' left in the components (capacitors being a culprit I expect) of the circuits feeding them. Stand there and watch then for a while and the glow will dim to black...eventually.

I just went out to check and sure enough my car has been parked for 3 hours and they are all OFF.

They glow as you decribed when all is swicthed off and I dont want to stand outside for an hour to check if they go black but as they are now I guess its not a mgic trick Rolling Eyes

Mburton..the auto electrician? may be able to give a definative answer.

I love the interior LED's but they are very bright and dare I say...a bit cold??? Confused If you want a nice warm glow dont go LED!

Re: LED replacement for boot light is a massive improvement.

Tempted to go with the LEDs, but wish to clarify a point.

mburton2 wrote:

yeah, I put the same bulb in the front-centre interior light in mine.....the LED is a little short, so the terminals need to be bent a little to make conact with the bulb...but once in, a much better light...

Does this mean that the boot bulb is smaller than the interior lamp bulbs?
If so, would this LED http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u42cw6-44mm-coo...-1387.html be a better replacement for the interior lamps?
Thanks in advance.

Hi RW.

I ordered the U36W6 as everyone else from ultraleds.co.uk and didn't have to bend anything!

Very odd as mburton said he did!

I was expecting to have to 'tweak' the roof lights a little bit with my snipe nose pliers but they fit well enough without, just as did the boot light.

Shine on!

Nope, I'm no auto electrician Im affraid...

I cant find the two bulbs that I removed, but they were not the same size...teh one from the Centre-roof was definately about 3-4mm shorter than the one from the boot....

I only had to bend the copper-sprung clips a little, to stop the LED-lamp from spinning around really....

EDIT
I've recenly put up a GU10 spot-light in my house, to shine on a really dark painting on the wall, and replaced the 35w Halogen lamp, with a 1.2w LED lamp...When this gets switched off, SOME of the LEDS (I think there is 18 in total?) still have a small glow to them....Im also assuming that this is due to some capacitors (In the built into AC-DC circutry) dis-charging & allowing the LEDs to give off a faint glow. As this lamp is left on 247, I've never noticed if they eventually go out! '57 FL2 GS

Thank you all for your information. Now I am a little wiser!
The interieur Sofitte-lamps are 42 mm long, the boot soffite lamp 39 mm. But you can use the 42 mm LED Sofitte also for the boot as there is enough room. You have to only bend the copper contact a little.
I am surprised about the extreme high price of the LED Sofittes in the UK.
Here in Germany you can buy the 42 mm 6-LED warm-white sofitte with 0,52 W for EUR 2,70/piece. If you buy 3, the price reduces to EUR 2,40. Shipping within Europe is EUR 6,95.
The source is: "www.leds-com.de"
I have purchased such LED-Sofittes from them and they ship within 2 working says. The LED-Sofittes are of good quality with a (burning) life of 100.000 hours. The light colour is fortunately not so cold - as they advertise: warm-white.
Maybe this is of any interest to anybody.

In a household bulb this could be the case as the caps may be part of the smoothing out of the AC signal for it to be converted into a steady DC low voltage supply for the leds.

On a car it is DC to DC though so do not expect there is a great deal of capacitors involved and would expect that the power that is maintained within the supply circuits is very low due to the nature of solid state switching.

I'm not an auto electrician, but it is part of my job, and I can't explain why the bulbs 'appear' to still be glowing....when I get a chance I will see if I can get a definitive answer from a tech guy in the LED lighting business.

Many thanks. I have ordered 2 for my car, one for the boot, one for the interior.

Hi Gambba,

meanwhile I have spread my question so much around in the automotive industry that I have received many responses and explanations which compliment each other. It is indeed the balance power of the capacitors which make the LED's glimming for a while, as the LED's react on very low current, what conventional lamps will not do. The moment this balance power is used-up, the glimming stops. So all my fears of battery problems are gone and I enjoy the LED-interieur lighting very much.

is that the correct bulb for both interior lights (front and rear) and the boot light?
