Good advice from rjc1944 I would add watch the auction up to the last minute if possible, if at 20 secs to go the item is still within your price limit then make your maximun bid. What if there were no hypothetical situations? |

I use goofbay sniper to log my maximum bid and let it do the job for me. No need to watch the bidding as it will do the job for you up to a few seconds before the auction closes. It's free and easy to use. I have managed to win bids quite consistently recently and usually well below my maximum bid. I believe there are other snipe providers but some charge a fee.

+1 for "sniping" agree that as the bid goes in at the last moment it does not drive up the price with people treating the auction as a competition, and it stops you getting carried away.
