I followed this thread with great interest - I like the stages that were suggested to you..and I'm keen to know what unvented system you propose to install. I changed my boiler from ancient to Vailant condensing and next stage is unvented for great showers...

2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Lago Grey

Hi all.

We have a "Megaflow" system..this is a normal boiler with a tank which is all at mains pressure. Fitted to 5 bed house with 2 showers. magic system...never a problem with pressure to showers and we can have as many taps/showers on as necessary and no problem. Been installed for 12 years now and no problems. family have condensing boilers in their flats but only on their own so no idea what these are like when there is peak demand. Good luck!

McPherson / Richards - check out http://www.rangecylinders.co.uk/tribune-he.html?

Good specs, quality controls and more importantly a 25 year warranty.

Also been following this thread. Really shows the value of forums! Have already replaced the Glow worm boiler. Am looking to change mine to pressurised cylinder some time in future - hopefully with a twin coil to link to a solar collector too. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I fitted a combi with built in 13 gallon "buffer tank"as well. Like you say it solves the old combi problem but retains combi efficiency and "power shower" effect. Before you ask, I am not a qualified gas fitter but the reality is you can fit it yourself as long as it is commissioned by a qualified person. John

McP - sorry I'm late onto this (but you'll guess what's slowing me down at the moment) however I am cheered to see that you'll probably be supporting Derbyshire manufacturing/engineering skills by making a glowing and valiant heating decision. The lads in Belper will be toasting your wisdom down the "Grapes" on Friday night!

Yes Valiant now occupy the Glow Worm factory in Belper knocking out (sorry - egineering both brands on the same site) which without doubt saved that particular factory from an uncertain future.

So, as you've received excellent knowledgeable support from the FreeL2 community I'll raise a glass to the success of your project. Cheers Thumbs Up

I mentioned in passing that an unvented system has to be installed by a competent plumber and signed off by a G3 qualified engineer, The reason being that you have a potential BOMB in your property. I also believe that Building Control at the local authority have to be informed but not sure on this point.

The tanks do have a safety blow off valve (Wrong name for sure) and one of the tricky jobs in our house was running a pipe from this valve to the outside of the house - now sorted.

Make sure that there is a 2 way motorised valve for BOTH the heating and the water. Sometimes sloppy (unqualified) fitters use a 3 way valve which is a big big no no.

I once had a little bird crawl up the loft water tank over flow pipe, it drowned.

First the water started to smell a bit off when showering, then the shower stopped working. I disassembled to fault find and found feathers in the gauze filter of the shower valve Crying or Very sad .

I had to remove the loft tank to thoroughly clean it, but it took weeks before I forgot about the whole thing whilst turning on a hot tap.

Why the plumber used a 2" bore overflow I dont know, It now has a mesh over the end. At work
