I followed this thread with great interest - I like the stages that were suggested to you..and I'm keen to know what unvented system you propose to install. I changed my boiler from ancient to Vailant condensing and next stage is unvented for great showers...

Also been following this thread. Really shows the value of forums! Have already replaced the Glow worm boiler. Am looking to change mine to pressurised cylinder some time in future - hopefully with a twin coil to link to a solar collector too. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Whatever you decide to do Mcp, do not on under any circumstances allow it to be fitted by British Gas, the one today did came in a van but I am sure that most of them come on horseback, complete with Stetson, Six Shooter and Spurs, after having mine fitted exactly a week ago it has I have am now expecting them again tomorrow, only two days out of the last seven have I not had someone here repairing it |

I fitted a combi with built in 13 gallon "buffer tank"as well. Like you say it solves the old combi problem but retains combi efficiency and "power shower" effect. Before you ask, I am not a qualified gas fitter but the reality is you can fit it yourself as long as it is commissioned by a qualified person. McP - sorry I'm late onto this (but you'll guess what's slowing me down at the moment) however I am cheered to see that you'll probably be supporting Derbyshire manufacturing/engineering skills by making a glowing and valiant heating decision. The lads in Belper will be toasting your wisdom down the "Grapes" on Friday night!

I mentioned in passing that an unvented system has to be installed by a competent plumber and signed off by a G3 qualified engineer, The reason being that you have a potential BOMB in your property. I also believe that Building Control at the local authority have to be informed but not sure on this point.

Make sure that there is a 2 way motorised valve for BOTH the heating and the water. Sometimes sloppy (unqualified) fitters use a 3 way valve which is a big big no no.

I once had a little bird crawl up the loft water tank over flow pipe, it drowned.
