Agree with BigAlf standard tyres are classed as All Season Mud & Snow and will give a reasonably good performance in all but the most extreme winter conditions - the sort not often found in the UK. I would save your money, stick with the OEM tyres and possibly invest in a set of snow socks at about £60 for the odd occasion when you need them.

I've had a pair of snow socks for 3 years but never needed to use them and that includes trips to the Alps in the depth of winter so even they are probably an unnecessary addition to my equipment.

I had some fitted to my 2010 GS size 235/65/17

Avon Ranger Ice with (for the observant members) 'patented serrated snow groove' Whistle

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10276.html

They come in for cold icy days and wet roads not just snow and I am informed by members here that 7C or below is where they come into their own. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The Doctor: Correct they are optimised for temperatures below 7C and in such conditions will be better than the OEM tyres. However, OEM tyres will be good enough for 90 - 95% of the time and it comes down to whether or not you can justify the cost of a second set of wheels and tyres to cover the last 5-10%. As I've mentioned before I've never needed winter tyres on my 2 Discoveries and 2 Freelander 2's in the Alps or UK but I do have snow chains and snow socks for the odd occasion when I might need them but to date never have.

I will not criticise those who opt for winter tyres and if I lived in the Alps, Peak District, North York Moors, Highlands etc I would opt for them but living in the relatively flat East of England I've made the choice not to bother.

I agree mate. Until the kind offer from my parents as per the link I posted, I was happy to stick with the Wranglers but I was well pleased with some free winter tyres Very Happy LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

that size is for the 16" wheels on the S version I think, don't HSEs come with 18" wheels? however in winter 16 or 17 inch wheels are much less likely to get damaged thaan 18 or 19 inch wheels due to the higher sidewall, All terrains tyres in those sizes tend to have wheel rim protection beads 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Yaugher ... back to your original specific query, looks like the answer is no, even if you had 16" wheels.

I don't think the thinking on 16" or 17" wheels being better for off-road application applies so much to on-road winter conditions. & it's very much not just about 4x4 traction on acceleration with winter tyres, it's also vey much about braking & cornering foot off the accelerator in low temperatures particulalry on wet as well as slushy & snowed on surfaces (sheet ice needs studs/chains to be effective)

Having said all that I am rather tee'd off with the lack of snow or even low temps here in the S West ... my 2010 HSE's 18" Ranger Ice winter boots with yes, the 'patented serrated snow groove' have yet to prove themselves!
