basis is that the cars run well always have, I have used 'premium' fuels when travelling further afield and have noticed no difference. filled to the brim with bp's finest once after running the car down to fumes, no difference At work

Must admit to not trying this 'expensive' fuel yet but reading up on it, it does claim to have benefits. I'm not interested in MPG, the only thing that would sway me is if it helps in the longevity of the working parts, eg injectors, turbo, fuel pump and so on.

Just to add another bit of 'fuel to the fire' there is a current (and lengthy) discussion regarding putting 2-stroke oil into the cheaper diesels to make things smoother, quieter etc. I have tried all of the 'quality' diesels and have to admit that I can't tell the difference from the budget ones (apart from price of course) but adding a bit of 2-stroke oil certainly makes things quieter in the mornings. Maybe in these days of low sulphur fuels we need a little more lubrication to the pump & injectors - worth a try anyway. Cheers,

I know, that's another one I have been following with interest, I mean to try it but never do. |

cripes the 2 stroke thing rears it head again. this forum once had the reference thread for the 2 stroke debate, people from all over including South Africa (sadly in this case) joined in the discussion.

I almost always use Shell. I tried VPower for about 4 tanks full but it did not seem to make any significant difference to justify the extra price. However, speaking to a Total tanker driver the other day, he says they all fill up at the same BFIs anyway - so how do the brands differ? 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I've noticed no difference with the Shell, but a definite performance improvement with BP Ultimate and also with 50% biodiesel. In both cases improvements were down to the higher cetane rating of the fuel.

Not positive about this, but.....I beleive the difference between the petrol from each retailer is that some use different additives, not sure when this is added? at the refinery or at the fuelstation? |

Yep. Recycled cooking oil biodiesel from Purefuels http://www.purefuels.co.uk/ . I'm not sure I'd use it in the Fr2 though. Worked a treat in the Disco. I'd turn up at the bio pump with half a tank of normal, fill up with bio, drive up to Durham and refill with normal. Absolutely no problems and, as I said, better performance. Quite a lot of London taxis use 100% bio - reduces emissions drastically and helps get them through various tests they have to do. Some manufacturers, eg Merc and VW, are happy with 100% bio, although their English concessions don't always know that. Needs additives in the cold weather. |

Definitely not at the fuel station - at least it wasn't possible when I used to run one many moons ago. Any additives have to be carefully controlled at the refinery. Oh and be careful of the Bio and NEVER run 100% mix for more than a tank full at a time - only some pumps & injectors will tolerate it and need the additives to prevent bearing & seal failures.
