Hi everyone, I've just been out today looking for a Freelander HSE, around 07-08 plate.
I found the perfect one, but on the test drive there was an audible wurrr from the rear.
I pointed this out, the salesman couldn't hear it but said he would get it checked out.
I had a call this afternoon and he said the workshop had found a worn rear wheel bearing.
My question, because I thought it might have been the diff, is , is there a problem with diffs after about 60,000 miles and is it common for wheel bearings to go at this mileage .
I really liked the car and its the right money, but would I be buying further problems.

My 07 65,000 mile FL2 had it's rear passenger side wheel bearing changed a few weeks ago.

Get them to change it and have another test drive

Best way to diagnose wheel bearing is to swing the FL2 side to side (shifting the vehicle body weight) if it is the bearing then when the weight is shifted to the other side it goes quiet.

Mines been fine since the bearing was replaced. and I absolutely love it.... 2002 Honda VFR800

Bought it in Feb this year - don't know how it had been driven - but with a 12 month warranty didn't worry...

I have pushed it hard for the first 6 months to see if anything needed looking at - the bearing is the only thing so far  2002 Honda VFR800

Mind you - thinking about it - get them to check the rear drum brakes (the hand brake) as the 'expanders' may have seized (mine had!) they are quite cheap to replace and in my limited opinion could be a cause for the wheel bearing going????????

Some people on here have had the rear wheel bearings replaced. There doesn't seem to be any particular reason why they failed. They seem to be on the older FL2's

They can only hear things like that when youre trying to trade yours in

Just as an update,
I contacted the dealer this morning to see the out come of the issue.
They said it was a little more serious than originally thought and the problem was still there after replacing the bearing,
The workshop had confirmed the diff was at fault and LR had quoted them more than a grand to fix.
So they were going to put it to auction as it was not an economical fix and they are not allowed to sell trade vehicles.
So someones going to catch a cold at auction in the next few weeks

Nice of them to be honest with you about it though. Many places would have tried to fob you off.

Put up the registration so if anyone searches for it, they might find this thread
