DSC fault light comes on when off-roading

I've noticed my DSC fault light comes on when off-roading (usually when loosing traction while climbing hills). Is this normal? The fault light goes off after the car regains traction. Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.

It's perfectly normal.
It tells you that the traction control is kicking in.
You can also find the response to your question at page 145 in the handbook.
If a wheel looses traction, ETC will operate the brake on that wheel until it regains traction.
The warning indicator will flash to inform the driver that TETC is operating.

If you are on sand then turn the DSC off, it just gets in the way and kicks in right when you don't want it.

I've never completely understood that. In fact I recently asked a question about this over on landroversonly: http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f41/q...post406271

It sounds like DSC focuses on maintaining control while cornering. It does this by reducing engine power and breaking the outside wheels. Turning it off when in a terrain response mode turns off the engine power reduction component. Wheel breaking of slipping wheels still occurs through ETC.

Is the only reason to turn DSC off to maximize engine power? Would one ever want to turn off ETC in sandy conditions? If so, why? It seems like breaking the slipping wheel is almost universally a good thing. Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.

On (soft) sand you can very quick loose momentum because of the braking effect that sand has on a car.
Therefore, a slight slip (when moving, of course) is sometimes a very small price to pay in contrast with loosing momentum.
In this situation, if you leave the DSC on, cutting engine power is not desirable at all.
Remember, DSC is the one you can turn off, the TC is always on.
The DSC system acts on two main directions: course correction during cornering and anti slip regulation (ASR).
The last one you want to disable by disabling DSC.

You get half way up a dune and lose all power to every wheel and all your momentum. Trust me, give it a go and you will understand. It happens under really heavy load.
