Advice on disabled hand controls

Hi everyone,
Like to express my troubles to the forum.
The car is here, because am disabled must get hand controls put in.The engineer doing this rang me up and blasted me out for not telling him that there is a knee air bag,he knew about the car 5mths ago and before they delivered it to him i said do you want the handbook and he said no.
The trouble is that the authorities wont agree to disconnect the knee airbag(if goes off will interfere with the hand controls) until they get legal advice, they think if someone else drives it and there is an accident there could be legal implications.
The disability discrimination board think that they may have a case, after all its only an accessory and the car is mine and should choose to do what i like with it.. Big Cry hope to drive soon or there may be a big legal battle.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
As the owner you do have the right to turn off any of the safety accessories.
Land Rover allows you to turn off the passeger (front) airbag and the DSC, both
of which are safety devices fitted to the car.
So turning off your knee-bag shouldn't be made into such an big issue by the
authorities. If they are concerned about legal implications should someone
else drive your car, suggest that you will place a warning sticker or notice inside
"Knee-bag disabled due to special adaptation".
Hope it works out for you soon...

What i find strange is that they are worried that they may damage/interfere the hand controls

If your in a situation were the airbags have to inflate the hand controls or a steering wheel will be of no use anyway as the impact has already happened.

I suppose if there are any connection parts that pass in front of the knee airbag could be catapulted into the driver, but then any thing that is attached to the steering wheel could be effected with that airbag too.

I do hope that this is sorted out,

I feel LR have not acted accordingly if you told them of the use of the car/what you would be doing/adding, but by the sounds of it neither has the installer,

Is there any other type of system that could work without interfering?

Sick of waiting for something to happen. Yawn

Rang up talkback radio today and explained my disgust at the mess am in to the announcer, listeners.
The car expert there spoke to me afterwards and is making an enquiry into the authorities handling of the situation on my behalf.
Also the disability discrimination lawyer is looking into it as well.

hi Kangy.

I've just done a quick 'search' on the forum with key words like disabled and hand control, but no results.

However, you might get more response from the forum members if you change your subject from 'my freelander' to some thing that more resembles what your query is, for examaple 'advice on disabled hand controls'.

Thanks for all your advice and recommendation.

Approval given next day to put them in after ringing the radio station.
He is going to put in a switch to turn the knee air bag on and off,the controls fitted can be undone to remove them as well.
Hope to be driving by next thursday.

Contributors to this discussion should note that there are different legal jurisdictions involved here. It's not just a technical problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

very much a different kettle of fish, country to country

Obviously this is a old thread and was discussed back in 2007, so i would assume the OP has sorted the issue out and will probably driving a different car now also Laughing

I'll leave the above new post there, but have removed the commercial link, but it might help others in the future Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Rolling Eyes

When i remove a link it doesn't mean go back and replace it, because you think someone might want to use it

I was kind enough to leave the name of the company, and if some one was to come across it, then they can google the company

instead you just make yourself look like a spammer instead Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
