I used to use chains on my Morris Minor Traveller in the bad snow. They work a treat and make the car drive like a tractor!!

Now I have the FL2 I leave the Traveller in the garage in winter!

I used a set of snow socks last winter and they did a good job but only if you know your route is covered in snow. Once you hit salted roads/tarmac you have to take them off otherwise they start disintegrating.

I loved driving in Norway in the winter with studded tyres. Andy

Due to the somewhat unique wheel profile of the FL2 and the small sales figures here in Oz, obtaining snow chains is near impossible and cost prohibitive. We only need snow chains in Alpine areas for short periods when attending ski fields so it's a lot cheaper to catch a train or ski-bus etc if the snowfalls are heavy. In one State, 4WD's don't legally need to carry chains (hence where I go skiing) but in another you do. Having a cheap set of chains in the back (that don't fit but look OK) would probably satisfy the fun-police but I'd rather spend my tourist dollars in the more pragmatic State where a decent driver and decent vehicle is preferable to an idiot in an unsuitable car.

French police say snow chains are mandatory in areas with heavy snowfall. Bought some spikes spiders last year before a trip, and apart from trying to fit them once in our drive before we left, they never came out of the boot. FL2 performed admirably in the alps, there was never any doubt about getting anywhere (except when road was closed due to avalanche). I guess whether you buy any depends whether you want to risk being fined by the French. Fuji White MY13 SD4 Dynamic

i've used them lots of times over the years but never needed them in my Discovery's or Freelander's. Remember one occasion in the French Alps when the Gendarmerie were stopping all cars and making them put chains on. One look at my Land Rover driving out of a 1 metre deep snow drift and going up a snow covered road and i was waved on with a smile.

I have set of snow chains for my current Freelander to satsify the requirement in some Alpine regions but have not yet needed either. I also have a set of snowsocks which i fitted once when attempting to recover a BMW Z3 from a snow filled ditch, in the end I took them off and used the normal tyres to do the job.
