United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black
Lots of Black Smoke on high revs

Hi All. can someone help me out here. We have had this problem in the past when our FL2 was in warranty and it was fixed, but I never new the full reason other than I was told it was something to do with the Turbo and we were also getting low mpg, but when fixed, the mpg went was much better.
When we drive the FL2 and boot it in the low gears we get a massive plume of black smoke comes out of the rear and god help anyone behind us. We also get a low mpg, even when driving conservatively we only get about 32mpg and god help us when we are towing the carvan it is more like 22mpg.
Can anyone suggest the sort of problem that we are experiencing or has anyone else experienced these problems. Regards
Howell Rees

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Had a prbolem with black smoke in my Discovery TD5. Mechanic said it was caused by me not driving it hard enough.
Black smoke was cured by two cans of fuel cleaner additive and the mechanic driving hard for about half an hour. Could also try using a premium brand diesel with built in cleaner.

Get your oxygen sensor checked out, it could be mis reading the oxygen content in your exhaust gasses and 'riching' the fuel.

Can't help with the black smoke but 32mpg, driven gently, and 22mpg towing sounds about right.
Checked the ait filter recently?
Been off-roading? - the intercooler is low down and will fill with debris, the only way to clear it is to take off the front bumper and take the intercooler off, just using a hose pipe is a waste of time. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

30-32 mpg is all I have averaged for over 2 years if ive been driving gently so your mpg probably isn't far off, unless you spend an awful lot of time cruising in 6th.
