Had a prbolem with black smoke in my Discovery TD5. Mechanic said it was caused by me not driving it hard enough.

Get your oxygen sensor checked out, it could be mis reading the oxygen content in your exhaust gasses and 'riching' the fuel. |

don't they say the EGR failing give this problem?

Can't help with the black smoke but 32mpg, driven gently, and 22mpg towing sounds about right.

30-32 mpg is all I have averaged for over 2 years if ive been driving gently so your mpg probably isn't far off, unless you spend an awful lot of time cruising in 6th. |
