Oil smell

I posted about this on someone else's thread but I am still having problems...

Getting the oil smell inside the cabin when waiting at traffic lights etc. Dealer has had the car in twice for a total of 9 days over this and allegedly fixed two oil leaks. The issue for me is not where the smell originates but how it's getting into the cabin. Turn off the climate control or set to recirc and it goes away.

The dealer has already done the breather pipe mod so it's not that. I have added some draught excluder to the underside of the battery cover as well but that hasn't really helped. The fit of the battery cover is pants though - I thought about gaffer-taping it in place but I'm worried about heat/fire issues Exclamation Maybe I can get some heat-resistant tape at Halfords or somewhere?

Cheers,
Gareth

I would take the car back to the dealer and have them keep it till the found were the smell comes from, if it doesn't get fixed i would look into handing the car back to them

The smell of oil, must be not good for you, if the fumes get too much could it be a possible health and safety issue if you was overcome by them.

I would also get Land Rover Customer Care involved aswell Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Last time they did a 70 mile road test and still didn't notice the smell. I am in touch with Land Rover CC but they are "passive" to say the least.

Contract hire Sad

However it's my ltd co, I am the director, lessee etc etc. Need to take it up with the lease co I think rather than trying to work directly with the dealer.

Thanks for all your help on this stuff today - you are clearly as busy as I am Smile

They might have a bit more success if they lease quite a few LR's might shock them into doing something, though I don't think i should matter on a buy back, but they would have to be involved.

I been away for a while, and reading the thread I realised that my battery cover fix , also included releasing the push in fixings on the rest of the plastic bulkhead cover , raising it enough to also reposition , replace the foam gasket there. This plastic bulkhead is the bulkhead the battery covery mates with. I can post some photos later in the wek when I get back home .. spent the last 2 weeks in CA / FL USA and not a sighting of a FL2 once ( a feww RRSs though in CA)

That's interesting - thanks for the info. It's in the hands of the lease company now. They have booked the car back into the dealers on Monday and sorted me out a replacement car until it's resolved.

Cheers,
Gareth

Got it back today. Extensive road testing done by dealer - can't find any fault.

I drive the 6 miles back to work, sit in car park, still stinks. What now? Sad

Could be that your climate system is contaminated. Try running it at lowest temperature & highest fan speed setting for approx 10-15 mins - you'll need to be driving the vehicle at the time.

Then do the same at the highest temperature setting for longer - 15-20 mins.

Do it in that order - the coldest setting prolonges the life & efficiency of the system & the hottest setting should clear out any contamination or residues within the entire system.

Let us know what happens. If the smell goes away then you will have identified the climate system as the problem. If this doesn't help with the smell, then you will have eliminated the climate system as being the problem.

Then it's probably a small leak in the fuel system somewhere.

I've uploaded the picture to my gallery , you can see the fastners I had to release to get the seal. I just used some packing foam along the edge , and re-fitted the fastners.

So why didn't the garage fix it , I suspect asking a mechanic if he notices the oily smell is like asking a sewerage worker "how do you work with the smell?" answer "what smell". They get used to it!.

My assumption was always that the smell was coming from the gearbox breather, and my next step was to connect a piece of tube to the breather outlet and run it somewhere else away from the bulkhead to see if it made a difference. But since my 'repairs' to the seal fixed my problem I didn't progress it.

My smell , was most definitely hot oil , same as you get when you change the oil and had that unique smell you get from synthetic oils.

I've learnt from past experience , things like this and rattles just never get fixed , you have to track them down yourself and then fix them or tell the mechanic what to do where.
