United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

well I am hoping i will get a call today to tell me its ready to collect ! they were trying to iron out some minor fault code still end of last week. At least its getting the attention it deserves Very Happy
Hopefully it will be like picking up a new car ! I am going to find out who's best to contact next when it lets me down !
I'm off with the caravan for two weeks touring around so that will be a good test and woe betide L/R if it lets me down with the van on the back

Now, now. There's every chance that the earth cable may turn out to be the answer. Give it a fair chance Wink

Agreed. Mine is the same year but with treble OGs miles on the clock, bought S/H this July. The day after I collected it I took it on a 500 mile round trip with caravan. It performed superbly, definitely the best tow car I have owned. Very Happy Hook up the 'van, put your holiday hat on and go for it! (and enjoy!) I got it out the garage this morning ! and drove 10 miles just to make sure it drove ok. Well it got me there and back so here's hoping. I will hook the caravan up Tuesday for 3 weeks so fingers crossed !
I have to admit that even the fan speed is stable for the first time in 3 years ! Smile

So are the problems all answered by the problem with the earth cable?

Is this an indication that we should all go out and add additional earth cables at various on the FL2 - just in case the main cable suffers? 2002 Honda VFR800

Finally retiurned after 3 weeks away with the van and FL2. So far so good ! hasnt missed a beat.
I still dont trust it one bit but will have to see over time. Its a shame that it took L/R 3 years to belive that there was even something wrong ! obvioulsy there sure was ! so it was the battery to body earth cable, high resistance and fluctuated when wiggled. Turned out to be corroded inside the shrink wrap ! No wonder its caused such havoc.
That explains why fitting the battery to engine cable improved things some what.

That's good news Thumbs Up

It seems so obvious now, but it must have been a nightmare to track the fault down.

Well its about 12 weeks now & for the first time in just over 3 years it hasnt flagged up a fault or missed a beat or done anything stupid ! Unreal. Now I know how they are supposed to drive.
Its actually driving really well & still returning 40+ MPG on a steady run which for an auto is not bad !
so heres to the next three months, if its makes the winter then its fixed. Very Happy

Just goes to show dealers are incompetent !

This is great news however I have 1 question...
How the heck do you manage 40 MPG! are you limiting yourself to 60mph or something?
How many miles has your engine done? Its a 2008 TD4 isnt it?
My 2007 HSE auto (26k miles) will not show any better than 30MPG even if I try really hard to achieve max MPG.
Am I missing something? 57 HSE AUTO with H.I.D's - Grey with Black leather. (H.S.E. Heightadjustable Seats Extra Sad )

Hi
Its just reached 20K & yes its 2008. The MPG was always really poor 23-26 & 29 tops if really careful.

Then I fitted the extra earth strap, to fix a starting issue & cleared all the fault codes from all the modules, there were many logged in the engine ECU but no light on !

Since then it will achieve 40 mph on a run. I do drive carefully but keep up with the traffic and on a motorway run set the cruise control to 63mph. Actually if i don't use the CC and drive at a steady 62-63 it will touch 42.2 on a 300 mile round trip. Thumbs Up

I was returning 37-38 on trips in France without the van on the back.

Returned on Friday from a 280 mile round trip and overall got 39.9 & filled up to the brim and it tallied ok.

Crumbs a full quarter better on MPG? Surely not just because of the fitting of an earth strap?
If it is though I think I’ll have to consider getting one fitted! Although mine has no faults other than a ripped seat bolster, and even that’s being sorted soon under warranty (especially seeing as it was torn at the dealers, by their own staff!) Anyway glad to hear things are finally settling down for you! 57 HSE AUTO with H.I.D's - Grey with Black leather. (H.S.E. Heightadjustable Seats Extra Sad )

Thank you, its the first time in 3 years I have enjoyed everything working as it should !

The link may explain the improved fuel consumption , but there will be those that laugh !! One interesting fact is that if you scope the electrics and injector pattern etc with extra substantial earth's the wave forms change, they run a lot cleaner ( electrical wise ) and as I have improved results I'm quite happy.

Hmmm, believable, although I am surprised that something this simple can do so much good and hasn't been picked up during the design & testing of the FL2 before it went on sale.
Proof is obviously in the pudding and probably worth a try as there is nothing to loose. I'll try it on the D4 to see if it makes any difference to the mpg in that.

Did they fit extra earth straps on your car or just replace the faulty one Question ______________________

Oldgezeer, is this earth strap the one that fits to the gearbox casing or does it connect to somewhere else?, think I will have a go at fitting one, if it only improves fuel consumption it will be worth it.

Ps glad you got things sorted. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.
