Towing

Been searching through various posts but not found the info I am looking for so apologies if this has been covered before and I have just not found the right post.

The vehicle I have purchased does not look like it has ever had a tow bar fitted

So what's the best option to fit

I Do Not tow a caravan Very Happy

But mainly an Ifor William twin axle trailer

I know I cannot tow same weight / capacity as the d3 or my 110 but the height of the tow bar is critical

When I had the detachable swan neck on the D 3 it was just too low and I ended up putting the multi height bar on so I could get the trailer level

What is the standard height of the fl2 ball. ?

I had a look on landy web site they do not do a multi height bar. Anyone have one fitted pics ?

I will also look to get one has a standard ball fitted so I can use my maxxraxx cycle carrier subject to getting another fitting,

Is it easy to remove the rear bumper and self fit or best to get a dealer to do ?

Thanks Disco 3 HSE

Yes removing the rear bumper is easy - it's on here somewhere, if not I have it.

Dealer fit LR/Brink (=same) removable swan neck is 45mm +/- 1mm from the floor to ball centre

Quite possible the worst picture ever posted below..... Embarassed

Hi,
this isn't a very scientific reply but here goes!
Lloyd has a detachable LR tow bar (fitted by the dealer pre delivery-FOC).
I have an IW HB505 which Lloyd pulls along just fine- perfectly level.
I leave my tow bar on all the time now- some stupid fool drove into my dad's new shogun- result- Nissan almera with caved in front bumper. Shogun- readjust the silicon cover over tow bar! So I now see tow bars as a protective device!
Hahaha

I tow an ifor Williams trailer behind mine, and it sits fine. That's with just a normal swan neck!

I also leave mine on, for the same reasons as above!

Thanks

I will measure the height on the defender later as its set at the right height for it -

This was a purpose built trailer - that I bought so it may be slightly higher than standard. Although it looks similar -

(I tried to attach a pic but failed - )

Anyway - does a multi height one exist for the Freelander ? Disco 3 HSE

EC Directive 94/20 gives the height as between 350 and 420 mm from the centre of the ball when the towing vehicle is fully laden to its gross vehicle weight.

All later trailer chassis should be manufactured to the same height, I think your problem would be the 'laden height' of your vehicle and no, I have never seen a multi height plate for a Freelander.

Thanks
I know it sat too low on the D3 with the swan neck - and that was when empty - as was the D3 - ( I will also check the docs for the trailer when I get home form hols )

Thanks for the info on the Multi height - tow bar - - Think I will have a look round at the dealers and see what bars they have fitted -

Now to find the post for removing the rear bumper

I just went out and measured mine, it's 440 mm with an empty car so it would bring it into directive spec with luggage/passengers and fuel. It's a removable 'Witter' by the way, hope you sort it. Thumbs Up

Edit: Remember some towbar installations require the rear bumper to be removed and cut, the Witter doesn't.

I fitted a Witter detachable with a traditional flange(rather than swan neck) so I can detach when I need rear clearance ascending and when fitted I can raise and lower with a drop plate if needed. The Thule bike rack bracket remains on the flange. It works well for me and is a well known robust make which is easy to attach and detach.
I got it at a very good price from P F Jones and fitted it very easily myself without remioving the bumper. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

I have a non-detachable Witter towbar fitted with a fixed flange towball. I have just used it to tow a twin axle Ifor Williams double horsebox 60 miles to pick up a pony. Towbar height is spot on. Neither the tyres at the front or the back axle of the trailer appeared unduely weighed down. I've got 13 pin dedicated electrics fitted, but a 13/7 adapter did the job to power the trailer lights.

ps...I leave my maxxraxx bike rack plate permanently bolted on. It doesn't bother the rear parking sensors.

Witter make a detachable tow bar, which also has a bolted on ball hitch. you can fit an adjustable plate to vary
the hieght of the ball to suit what ever you are towing. Fitted one to my 11plate HSE, and I also tow Ifor Williams twin wheel plant trailer with no problem or adjustment. Fitted bar kit and dedicated electrics in about 1.5hrs,easy job, need to plug into computer to alter park sensors, find a friendly bar fitter, he might just charge you £20 if cash!.to do that. FREELANDER 2 2010 HSE LARGO GREY ALMOND LEATHER
