Roof Rails - DIY fit or not?

Hi: new to site and first post so bear with me.

Does anyone know whether the fitting of roof rails to a FL2 MY11 involves any cutting, removal of headlining etc?

I can see where the rear feet sit but there seems to be a separate bit of trim above the A post where the front connects. The dealer said he thought some cutting of this was necessary when I asked the question when the car was ordered but at the time I thought he was just trying to get me to let them do the work at extortionate rates.

Cheers

Jeff

roof rails fitting guide

hello and good evening

there is a fitting guide avail on the Topix website. i have recently aquired a set from the breakers and watched them remove them it is all done on the outside. the guide give the tools needed the hardest part would be cutting a 24mm hole in the plastic trim on the roof. i am going to start mine this weekend so will let you know who it goes. i might be able to photo it and post on site a the fitting guide has no writing. the person "who says a picture is worth a thousand words " does not work for landrover

regards

john

I fitted them myself.
You do not cut any interior headlining.
You can avoid cutting the roof rain gutter plastic trim where it states you should - the newer FL2 models (MY2009 on) have this aperture pre-moulded.
Do follow the instructions step by step and place a protective blanket on your roof to protect from accidental damage.
It is easier if you have a helper, step ladder and/or stool.
A torque wrench is required.

On the down side, if you take them off, replacement plastics cost over a ton.

Can someone please answer something that's been bothering me for a while?

If I can fit roof rails to my roof bar free Freelander, that take the full manufacturer's recommended roof loading, what is the point of roof bars? They only help to increase wind noise and make the roof more difficult to clean, don't they?

roof rails fitted freelander 2 "07" plate

put the roof rails on this morning, took about 2 hours total inc finding tools ect. had to cut a 24mm hole in front mounting postion through the plastic as roof bar fitment goes onto a stud that screws in, on newer models might be already done you need to check before fitting or have a 24 0r 25mm hole cutter available, the only difficult part is fitting the cross bar as you have to put in the 4 allen head bolts "5mm" from below the bar fiddley but ok to to do. be carefull not to damage the roof paint, place a cloth below
The six main fitting bolts are torx head screws so a sutiable bit is required to allow fitting.
Yes is a diy job if you have the tools or are willing to spend the money to obtain them.
Or better still give the job to somebody else if you are not confidant a hole cutter will cause a lot of damage if it slips!!

pm me if any advise is needed

regards

john

Out of interest, how much is a set of roof rails in the UK? I would like to buy some because I now have a roof tent and the Thule racks for FL2 have to be placed too far forward for the tent. The rails cost an arm and a leg here in Australia. Links to any sites selling the rails would be appreciated. Cheers, Mike
