OK - as per my previous posts, I'm looking for a circa £14,000 FL2 for my wife, mainly for school run (20 mins each way) and shopping trips etc.

I currently have a Disco 3 and hope to replace that soon with a Disco 4, so holidays, trips out, weekends etc tend to be in that. The FL2 is therefore very much a second car, and as such doesn't need to be high spec, sat nav'd and DVD'd etc.

We do live on a small farm, but the car is unlikely to do any serious off-roading, although the Disco does occasionally double up as tractor, dump truck, tow car etc.

I'm currently looking mainly at GS spec (perhaps with leather) or maybe XS. But, there are a lot of very good value, low mileage 'S' spec cars out there. I realise they don't have the terrain response - but other than the odd track and perhaps snow in winter - I doubt it would ever be used and certainly not in real anger.

So, is the 'S' spec really that bad? What else is it missing? Fog lights, but these could be added (I presume).

my first fl2 was a s spec,and it sure would do for your purposes,i would say terrain response is good as got a gs now,but my s was put through some difficult off roading at times,and pulled through.the rear parking sensors and bluetooth,other than the tr and the only things i rate and miss now if i had my s spec.i would rather get a newer s spec than a older/more milage gs spec any day. Current: Freelander 2 GS, Orkney Grey, Factory fit privacy glass, design pack and Clearview pack. Almond Leather ,rear spoiler,rear mudflaps.my13.

Do you know what model year these are for?

If they're not for something like 2007 or 2008, does anyone have a link to something like this for those?

Think I've just found the spec sheet in the Land Rover brochure section. Original 2006 release specs.

I don't think there were any worth while changes until MY11 when terrain responce was added as standard on the S.

Terrain response is nice but not really necessary I suspect. The main difference I noticed when I bought mine was the lack of cruise control, which I wanted. So I bought a GS manual with cruise control for the same price as an S auto. Have to say I like the car a lot and think I made the right choice, even though I normally drive automatics (and I actually use the cruise control much less than I did on my Disco 2!).

those who drive the S say they get around okay, so if you don't need the bells and whistles then if you can get a newer car in your budget then go for it.

When I was originally shopping for a FL2 i was going to look at a 2007 'S' model.

Then at the last minute I found a 2007 'GS' closer than the 'S'.

That was the only reason I didn't get the 'S'.

I believe, from reading many threads, that the 'S' without TR can have the panel fitted and connected but needs activating in the system. I believe the same is true of the audio controls and cruise control. 2002 Honda VFR800

Bought my GS in Feb so haven't changed the TR from 'normal' we'll have to see when (if) there is any snow/ice.

I have an S and it is fine, got me through all the snow and ice last year with no problems and have never got stuck anywhere. TR would be nice to have but it is really only any use if you regularly off road and how often does anyone drive on sand????? Also, just another bunch of electronics to go wrong as many threads on here point to. I think with Land Rover especially, less complication is better as not the most reliable of machines.

Guy i know is the manager for 15 contracted farms. Goes off road every single day. He has an 07 'S' and has only been stuck once in 45,000 miles and that was due to ground clearance which TR would not have helped with !!

Interesting point as the 'S' (I believe!) has all the necessary for the TR functions just hasn't the control knob and has not been activated in the ECU...
