We have had our SD4 since March and with about 3000 miles on the clock we are getting about 40-43 on a run and about 35 around town. Given that it is barely run in I am happy with that and wouldn't be surprised if it improves a bit over the next 3-4000.

I have noticed better fuel figures using a premium fuel (BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power). It is definitely more as a % than the extra cost and so we now only run on those fuels unless we have to. Smoother too.

Has anyone owned both a 08 / 58 TD4 auto and a 2011 SD4 190 Auto and compared the fuel economy between the two cars?
If so are the SD's better on Diesel than than the older TD's.  58 XS Rimini Red

I'm definitely going to give a premium fuel a try. When they were first intrduced I couldn't believe anyone would pay the extra but I've heard since that they give extra MPG. I didn't realise that the difference more than paid for itself. I certainly get a drop in economy using Tesco diesel. It must be very low cetane value? My old Discovery didn't like running on it at all!

Which begs the question, has anyone tried the expensive diesel fuel with 2 stroke oil added? If so how did you do?  58 XS Rimini Red

Average 33mpg 35+mpg over 200-300 miles without dual carr or motorway.

A week on Isle of Mull single track roads, steep hills, stop start in passing places, and fast runs to rally incidents in sport mode average over 200 miles 24mpg in 08 and 32mpg with SD.

Drive timekeeper at Merrick Rally, 50 miles on gravel forrest using GGS mode and in a hurry plus 100 miles narrow country roads 08 GS 24mpg SD on similar run 33mpg.

SD on 70 miles of snow covered forrest roads and 80 on narrow country roads all snow and ice 35mpg with SD. All FL2's (3) Gone

Second week of ownership of an SD4 HSE and my first tank of Tescos regular diesel has worked out at 32.5 mpg. Now done 600 miles so still very much running in but pleased with that as a baseline figure and as the engine loosens up then I expect to to see that nearer to the 40 mark given others experiences. My driving is about 40 miles a day motorway, 20 miles country lanes and 10 miles city/town so a mixed bag really. Big thumbs up so far - not sure how to insert emoticons.[/img]

If I use Tesco Diesel I get around 38mpg on my TD4 manual, if on the other hand I use Sainsbury's or Asda Diesel I get around 40mpg on similar journeys.

Im getting 42 on the motorway, and 38 combined. Only 600 miles so the engine is still tight and im happy with that. 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

Which is the MPG used for fuel economy? The imperial or US MPG?
The ones with instrument cluster coded to show MPG... is it British or US MPG shown?
Or US cars are showing US MPG and British cars are showing imperial MPG, so different IC coding?

Definitely UK Imperial measure. Government (manufacturers) figures quoted are from testing during type approval and other tests for compliance with regulations. All FL2's (3) Gone

Think you're splitting hairs about mpg between TD4 and SD4.
What's a few mpg's difference matter?
To put things into context, my son has a Yaris 1.0 and gets 40mpg around town. On the same cycle with my TD4 manual i get 34 mpg which i think is dammed good for such a large heavy car. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
