HELP! Headlight problem

My passenger side Xenon headlight stopped working a few weeks back. The sidelight and 'flash' work. I assumed a faulty bulb, then a faulty igniter but neither is the problem.

Finally I took the supposedly faulty passenger side unit and plugged it into the Driver's side and vice versa. The result being that it seems it is not the unit that is faulty. I looked through the fuses but nothing is marked for individual headlights. I tried swapping "R9" and "R12 " in the engine box fuse compartment as the symbols on them suggested headlights but still no change; drivers side electrics will light up a Xenon unit but the passenger side won't.

Anyone any ideas? New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC

Maybe an insulting question but do you have your lights turned on? I know when in 'park' mode only one side will light up on a lot of cars, whilst the ignition is off (I assume this is the case with the FL2).

Just a thought, don't hate me for asking the question Razz 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Do you have access to a voltmeter? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

So I asume that the drivers side worked in the passengers side and vice versa ????? or did i miss understand what you said.
What can usualy happen is that the ground wire "earth wire if you like" becomes loose or corroded. Its worth checking. If its loose then remove, clean and retighten.
I have seen loose or brocken wires on the lighting plug on older cars but ive not realy looked at the freelander lighting units yet. Its possible that it could be a faulty relay, you would have to look in the book for which relay it is. If there is a relay for each side then try swapping them around and if the passenger side then works just order a new relay.
9 times out of ten its usualy something little and if the unit works when plugged in the other side then thats one thing ruled out.
As pegleg has stated, do you have a volt meter as you can then check the supply voltage to the unit, this will then give you more info into what has happened.
I would put my money on a loose or corroded connection best of luck and please let us all know cheers Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes, you have understood correctly. The passenger side unit only works when plugged into the Drivers side electrics, the driver's side unit will not work when plugged into the passenger side.

So I'm assuming there is a fault with the passenger side loom or electronics. I took a guess that the items marked "R9" and "R12" in the Engine compartment fuse box where the appropriate relays. I switched them but there was no difference.

I don't have a voltmeter to hand, I may be able to borrow one.

If anyone can provide any further insight into the location of any relevant relays, fuses etc then please let me know. New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC

I just found a similar problem reported by "The Doc" and with the following response from "AlexPescaru"

Quote:
The car doesn't have a fuse for each dipped beam.
Dipped beams together with other lights (indicators, position, stop lights, etc) are driven by FET transistors from Central Junction Box. All of them have only one fuse, F18 (60 Amps) from Batery Junction Box.
But if other lights work (for example the other dipped beam) then, if cable problems and imperfect contacts are eliminated, you may have destroyed the corresponding FET inside CJB. Big Cry

Check for dipped beam voltage directly on the output pins of CJB. If you read voltage there, then you are lucky and is only a matter of cables and imperfect contacts.

If it isn't power there, then you'll need a new CJB.
Connector A, pin75 (blue-grey cable, 1.5mm section) Dipped Beam Right
Connector A, pin76 (brown-blue cable, 1.5mm section) Dipped Beam Left
There are 2 connectors with 76 pins on CJB. Connector A is the above one (towards windshield), when CJB is in place.

Comprehensive answer from Alex.
He is quite right, no fuses, powered by smart FETs.
Might not work, but try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
Failing that, it's checking the cable connectors with a voltmeter. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Right, problem is apparently fixed.

My wife took took it to a Landrover dealership for repair and after a lot of umming and aaahing the report back was (and this is via the missus so a a tiny bit vaguer than you'd like Laughing ) that" the problem in the headlight wiring tripped something and they thought that an expensive new part was required. Landrover head office said the expensive bit wasn't necessary and to just monitor it over the next few weeks".

So it appears that they didn't replace the central junction box (the expensive part?) and were able to make a simpler fix. New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC

OK. I have done most things that have been suggested. I Managed to get to the F18 fuse - intact. I have also checked all the fuses in the engine compartment and in front passenger compartment - all intact. Additionally I Removed battery terminals for 10 mins but still have the same issue.

I've had this problem several times, mostly when abroad having changed the dipping lever. Removing and replacing the plug on the back of the headlight unit fixed it temporarily a couple of times. However it was a very clever mechanic at the Aix-en-Provence LR agents who discovered the actual cause: one of the pins (the one carrying the xenon bulb power) in the plug had somehow got pushed, or just worked its way, back into the body of the plug so it was no longer connecting to the socket. He gripped the pin with long-nosed pliers and pulled it out. I saw what he did but could not understand his voluble explanation in thickly-accented French! This was nearly two years ago and it's been fine since. John Gwinnell
