South Africa 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Stornoway Grey
Running in?

Hi, I happily took delivery of my TD4 SE Auto, very happy, my dilemma is now the running in, the manual has 800kms, at 110km ( and 3000rpm), but the sales person told me to drive it quite agressively?

Who do I believe?

Thanks
Mike

take it easy the first 500-800km's.

The Sales Rep just wants to see you return and charge you for repair work................. Big Cry

Some of these vehicles have data recorders that LR access in the event of breakdowns, crashes etc (records speed, steering wheel position, brake pedal pressure.....) - so they will be able to see if you have screwed your vehicle from new.

I believe you should vary the rev range and not keep the revs set at a set level.

Also take car on the brakes as they will need 'X' miles to bed in.

Check your oil levels very regular as new engines absorb quite abit of oil

Check your tyre pressures too, as lot have had incorrect pressures when delivered Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Nowadays, I think that the "running-in" of car engine bearings is no longer necessary. What is of great importance for a diesel engine, is the "bedding-in" of piston rings, (obviously the heart of CI type engines) and for that to happen, you need to take things easy for about 500 miles. This means not exceeding say 2500 revs/min during that time, and also not putting your foot to the floor during that time, even if one is tempted in this brilliant FL2. After that, then occasional bursts of power should be given, in a gradual ascendance, lasting minutes rather than seconds, and continued as such. Once you are over that hill, then it is important to keep giving extra power to the engine at regular intervals, and for longer periods, until, I would suggest, that the engine has done at least 20k miles. My estimate is that my FL1 was "run-in" at around 25k miles, because that is when I noticed the fuel consumption steadying off (at 40+ mpg), and no engine lube oil was used between services.
