I'm not suprised you don't get a decent sound by trying to drive loudspeakers through a headphone socket. They are miles apart with impedance range!!!

You'd be better off using the scart socket or if you've got a red and white phono sockets on your TV,audio out.

I'd use a separate amplifier if i was you, TV amplifiers are crap, you can pick em up on fleabay dirt cheap.

If you're not sure how to hook it all up, it's dead easy, i'll help you if you need it.

My TV goes through 200 watts of pure class A amps, and a huge pair of Bowers and Wilkins floorstanders.

He should not be driving unpowered speakers directly from the headphone socket on the tv because it will be a mismatch of impedance, the earphone socket is expecting 75-150 ohms whereas unpowered speakers can be as low as 4 ohms. The PC speakers should be 240v powered and the lead from the tv earphone socket to one of the speakers audio input will go to the internal amplifier, which will be impedance matched.
It's cheap and it works well, my second 32" LCD tv does exactly that.

The PC Speakers have their own power supply.

Here is a photo of the back of the speakers with the cable they came with, no other option than to stick a red/white cable in the back! The green end im holding 'should' plug into the headphone socket (tried it on my ipod this evening and it worked perfectly!!)

That's a bummer, Mine has the green plug on both ends and the powered PC speaker has a green single socket in, there lies the difference and mine rocks it out.

aaarrrgggghhhH!! Purchased a red / white cable today and just tried it and still no joy! Plugged the leads into the side red/white sockets and also the rear ones but no sound! Had a quick look at the audio menu on the tv and the only option i could see was to turn the tv speakers off, although all this seems to do as switch the tv speakers off (thought it might activate the external ones) Anyone on here got an LG with similar connections who can help before i go insane and buy a black FL2 (thought i might add that one in seeing as though it is a FL2 forum!)

You did plug them into the bottom red/white on the rear I presume ?

In your menu is the anything regarding audio out

Audio out > tv?
Audio out > hdmi
Audio out > composite

Put up your tv model in full, it will be on a sticker on the back

Right a quick google and it appears LG might not out a audio signal whilst on a hdmi input

I believe the xbox will out put a analogue signal via the normal composite output

Since I bought my xbox off a mate I'm not sure if that is the original cable, I have found a sight which might help it you have a official cable with optical out

I know its of no use now Shilen but my Toshiba has no 'Audio out', that is why I bought PC speakers that had one green input jack.

Bought one of those cables off feebay, £4.20 and that included postage. just plugged it into the back of the xbox and hey presto SOUND!!!!

Cheers for all the help guys we got there in the end - now its time to upset the neighbours !!

Bit late I know but in those pictures of the TV all of those sockets with the exception of the H/P on the side will be input only. Some Scart will have audio out but frequently only the sound from the tv tuner. It is very odd watching an xbox game with the sound of eastenders coming from the HiFi.

The lead from the xbox was the only solution because it is the source at line level which is what the amplifier was looking for. Prog rock is cool!
