United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 S Auto Narvik Black
Freelander 2.2TD4 auto grearbox problem

Hi. I've just joined this forum as I'm hoping that someone out there can point me in the right direction. I've owned a 2.2td4 auto from 80 miles (although it was pre-registered in September 07 I only bought it from the Dealer in May 08). Covered 57k miles and had it serviced by the local LR Dealer on schedule and on mileage.

Last week the gearbox failed - the transmission warning light came on (amber) and I had to pull over. When I turned the engine off and back on the warning light went out but there was hardly any drive through the gearbox so I had to stop again and call out the AA. I had the car recovered to home and then nursed it the 15 miles to the dealer the next day! (I know I probably should have had the AA take it directly to the Dealer but it was late!)

To cut a long story short I'm now faced with a bill for a gearbox for £3384 + diagnostic costs. After a bit of bleating from me LR has offered a 25% contribution as a goodwill gesture.

I love the car and it has been faultless throughout the 3 years that I've owned it. But I now feel that I am being taken advantage of with the costs involved. Surely a gearbox should last more than 57,000 miles? LR customer services have been arrogant and just not interested at all. As far as they are concerned it's out of warranty and that's it. End of story.

Is there a known fault with this gearbox or am I just going to have to pay? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I just don't have that kind of money sitting around! I really expect this kind of car to go for 100,000 + before this kind of expenditure is required.

Sorry to hear of your problem. With a car out of warranty I would not go to a main LR dealer. A new gearbox will undoubtedly solve your problem (at a cost) but you can probably get your gearbox repaired by a sepcialist auto gearbox firm. You won't get 25% of the cost from LR but it will probably be alot cheaper anyway. Try looking at the www.honestjohn.co.uk site and type in gearbox - you will find a few firms specialising in repairs that he recommends. Alternatively look in your local directory for a similar firm.

Worth a try.

There was a recall of auto boxes for reconfiguration of the transmission and differential control modules in December 2010. - Service Action Q106. If you have not been notified, this may help your case as it may be a cause of your auto box failure. It affected VIN range H012596 to H200566. Freelander 2 TD4 Auto gear box problem 2007 model

Hi,
I previousaly mentioned that my 2007 Freelander with 57 k had failed on me and was found to have a gear box fault and now needs a new auto gearbox at a cost of £3,380 . LR have offered a 25% reduction and I wondered how this works. Is the 25% off the cost of the gear box parts? does the dealership also get a reduction on LR parts to start with? and if so what is the average reduction to trade?
I am asking these things as my car is out of warranty by nearly 9 months and my local dealer does not want to know. I have a platinum privilege card which states that I am entitled to 10% discount on Labour costs and 10% discount on Land Rover gear (Does anyone know if LR gear means parts or is it in relation to gimmicky extras with LR logos on?). The Priviledge card also mentions a 10% discount on "Rapid Repair". Would my car fall into any of these categories if I agreed for them to start the work tomorrow?
One last thing. My car is one which does fall within the recall for a minor modification to the gear box soft wear. I am not aware of having had a letter sent to me and have since found a copy of the recall on the internet.
I wonder if I have a greater case now as I am unable to locate an independant LR specialist which can do the job cheaper (with 25% discount)and get it any cheaper.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have a look at consumer rights/sale of goods act. "fit for purpose" might help you to get 50% or more. All FL2's (3) Gone

I agree with druand. A box failing after 57,000 miles is not of satisfactory quality. Might be worth getting a solicitor who specialises in consumer law to send the dealer a letter, that might shake them up a bit. Remember (where cash sales are concerned at least) your contract is with the dealer not LR in itself.

Remember, there is an assumption that big rich companies always win and taking them on in law is pointless. Trust me though, whilst studying for my law degree I have seen many cases where David beats Goliath! Laughing

One woman had a washing machine break down out of warranty (not sure how much out) and the staff at Curry's basically smirked and laughed in her face when she threatened them with legal action. They had their comeuppance and ate humble pie when she beat them in court. She got a new washer, compensation and they had to pay all the costs.

Different situation here but the principle is the same. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The box is a "sealed for life" design so the repair options will be limited due to a lack of spares Prog rock is cool! Smile

Sealed for life refers to the lubrication issues it doesn't mean it can't be repaired. LR won't offer repair it's not cost effective, they will just offer replacement - as they have. Out of warranty means just that, so getting more than they have offered - 25% off something unspecified - is going to be difficult to better, time consuming and probably potentially expensive.

True, anything mechanical has the potential to be repaired but when the manufacturer designs a unit which he does not expect to be repaired but replaced instead any spares tend to be hard to get hold of and is frequently limited to standard components only. I frequently get asked to fix things which have no spares available and it can be very difficult.
So in the case of a gearbox bearings may be standard and obtainable but the gears are almost always specific and they get chipped in a manual or the syncros fail.
The auto box has 3 wet plate clutches, 1 sprague clutch and two brakes, all by definition friction devices so have potential to wear out so can a overhauler get new plates? As the gears are always permanently engaged it is unlikely these would have a problem. Prog rock is cool! Smile

For sure. Don't worry. It's a widely spread gearbox.
It's used (with minor differences) by Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, GM, Volvo, Mazda, Opel, VW, etc.
Sonnax and Automatic Choice are two of the many that supply replacement parts.
