Sorry to hear of your problem. With a car out of warranty I would not go to a main LR dealer. A new gearbox will undoubtedly solve your problem (at a cost) but you can probably get your gearbox repaired by a sepcialist auto gearbox firm. You won't get 25% of the cost from LR but it will probably be alot cheaper anyway. Try looking at the www.honestjohn.co.uk site and type in gearbox - you will find a few firms specialising in repairs that he recommends. Alternatively look in your local directory for a similar firm.

There was a recall of auto boxes for reconfiguration of the transmission and differential control modules in December 2010. - Service Action Q106. If you have not been notified, this may help your case as it may be a cause of your auto box failure. It affected VIN range H012596 to H200566. There are previous posts about this with more detail. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

Have a look at consumer rights/sale of goods act. "fit for purpose" might help you to get 50% or more. All FL2's (3) Gone

I agree with druand. A box failing after 57,000 miles is not of satisfactory quality. Might be worth getting a solicitor who specialises in consumer law to send the dealer a letter, that might shake them up a bit. Remember (where cash sales are concerned at least) your contract is with the dealer not LR in itself.

The box is a "sealed for life" design so the repair options will be limited due to a lack of spares Prog rock is cool!

Sealed for life refers to the lubrication issues it doesn't mean it can't be repaired. LR won't offer repair it's not cost effective, they will just offer replacement - as they have. Out of warranty means just that, so getting more than they have offered - 25% off something unspecified - is going to be difficult to better, time consuming and probably potentially expensive. |

True, anything mechanical has the potential to be repaired but when the manufacturer designs a unit which he does not expect to be repaired but replaced instead any spares tend to be hard to get hold of and is frequently limited to standard components only. I frequently get asked to fix things which have no spares available and it can be very difficult.

For sure. Don't worry. It's a widely spread gearbox. It's used (with minor differences) by Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, GM, Volvo, Mazda, Opel, VW, etc. Sonnax and Automatic Choice are two of the many that supply replacement parts. |
