Proud new owner seeking advice on bike racks

Hi everyone, i've just aquired my very first 4 x 4 (a wee bit different to my Peugeot 307...i can tell ya) and am thinking of adding a bike rack to carry 3 bikes but note that the official LR offering only accomodates 2 bikes; can anyone recommend a good rack that will take 3 ~ i'm not keen on putting them on the roof. GS with the Leather Pack ~ Zermatt Silver

Just looked at www.roofbox.co.uk

They have a "What fits my car section" they show maxxraxx but all are tow bar fixings

My brother has a adjustable rack that clips on top of the boot & bottom of the boot style thats arms are tottally adjustable, I can see no reason why you wouldn't be able to adjust and fix that style of rack.

There are always the Roof rack mounted style, (look abit top heavy and you have to avoid low bridges) Laughing

If you go down the tow bar route, Thule and some other companies have them that tilt away from the car so you can still open the boot without taking the bikes off, I saw a Danish couple with on of these, it just clamped onto the tow ball and pulled a pin to tilt it even had the number plate and lights built into it. (Legal requirement nowadays, unless your collecting points)

I've got a Halfords one. It's a universal fit for most cars, but does fit well on the FL2. It carries 3 bikes. The only downside is that you can't open the boot once it's fitted.

I'd be tempted to go for roof bars and cycle holders - at least it means you can still get in the boot.

But you cannot get under the barrier that prevents commercial trucks getting into at a lot of FE carparks as well! I recently saw an F2 towing one of those small ERDE trailers that Halfrauds sell that had been modified to take a set of crossbars and a bike rack for 4 bikes on it, quite a good way to do it as you don't loose any mpg due to the roofrack and you have a box trailer for storing all the wet cycling gear after a good day on the trails too. And of course you also have a useful trailer for going to the tip and camping to keep all the dirty stuff out of the car or free up interior space to carry more passengers. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Gone but will be missed- RRS Tdv8 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather
Gone (only a little missed) RRS Tdv6 2.7SE Giverny Green/Aspen

Thanks for the advice gents Thumbs Up , i did consider the trailer option as i've also seen it in action and thought `what a great idea` but not always so good for parking up in regular car park spaces. It looks as if the tilting tow bar option from Thule would suit me best as it still gives boot access and keeps the bikes away from the roof, something i've never been keen on. (wind noise, height restrictions, dirt over top of car and possible scratches).

I have the tilting Thule tow bar bike rack. Unfortunatley, it does not tilt far enough for a FL2 tailgate to open. It is great other than that, especially given that it comes with a light board.

Cheers,
Howard

I would still look into the towbar bike racks, there are other brands that may tilt further.

I finally bought one, but due to practical reasons, I had to go for the one from Eufab http://www.eufab.com/de/site/shop/detail.p...;place=yes
Here some pictures :
normal position

away from car

plenty of space to open

you can easily go between rack and car

I wish i had seen them before i bought the LR one. Still, opening the tailgate with the rack fitted is not too important to me as our back seats will be down to get all our gear in anyway, but very nice all the same... Out with the old (2007 SE)
In with the new (2012 Dynamic with everything). Now also gone.

Nice one Superkoala. Can it be attached on the detachable LR tow bar?

I don't see why not, it just 'grips' on the ball
