Question about Red Diesel

Just read an interesting article on the bbc news website about a very nice farmer who cut the grass on the pitch for his local football team for FREE.

HMRC came along tested his diesel and fined him for mowing grass with red diesel which isn't agricultural use.

My question is what is allowed with Red Diesel and what isn't????????

Can you drive a vehicle on the public highway powered by Red Diesel - and to what extent. 2002 Honda VFR800

and anyone who can get away with it, don't even know if the difference is colour only or a lower grade. I've never been stopped in all my years of driving, if I could source it I would use it.

I you do that in Belgium they calculate the excess based on how much you drive yearly + a steep fine. I think they go back 5 years or so. Even if they only find a small trace. Not a risk worth taking here!

All diesels are the same but the add a color to destinguish them for different uses (read taxes). It is un undesolvable unremovable color and if you only have had used it once they can trace it back forever.

just like adding red 2T oil to the tank, just the colour will cause a whole world of problems until they test it and find its 2T oil dye Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I've been stopped and tested! about 7 yrs ago just when diesel cars were on the up, there was an HMRS testing station always at the services on the M1 down south.

I've also seen them stopping and testing round by me quite recently.

I think its an absolute shocker that the farmer got nicked though. I used to drive tractors around running on red diesel to harrow and role private stables - whats the difference? Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

farmers can use red in tractors etc but only on agricultural work

not:
moving furniture, garden waste etc etc with a tractor /trailer.
sweeping mud off the road Rolling Eyes classed as highway maintenance. many farmers still do this for common sense reasons but arnt strictly allowed
travelling to the pub etc in a tractor.
towing a broken down car/caravan off the road.
towing cars out of a private car park ,happened at the Yorkshire show recently tractors had to use road fuel to tow stuck vehicles even when not on public highway, C+E stopped all towing until fuel was changed even though it was very wet and plenty of people where stranded.
using a tractor as towing vehicle but not to and from your own agricultural interests. ie collecting animal feed from a mill not owned by you and delivery to someone elses farm.

red is currently 65ppl ish plus vat some duty is paid on it but much less than white diesel (derv)
red isnt always upto the spec of white but has recently had biofuel added to it in-line with road fuel, this loosens all the dirt in the bottom of tractor fuel tanks and storage tanks, fuels filters are going to sell well this year. unless your a conciousness farmer and have good diesel hygiene At work

My mate, known locally as the Mad Farmer, keeps his Derv in one tank and the Red Stuff in another. Problem is they both use the same electric pump and come out of the same nozzle, so the first few litres to come out are whatever he used last. NIGHTMARE!!!!

fuel tankers do that, if delivering derv and red diesel to the same site for example, the hose potentially contains many litres of the wrong fuel, so at the end of one fill the driver presses a button and the new fuel purges the pipe, stopping flow just as the new stuff reaches the nozzle.

allegedly a near neighbours farm yard is chocked full of tranny vans every Sunday morning topping up with special farm fuel.
one of the vans got caught, fined £400 and told not to do it again Rolling Eyes At work

Customs and Excise normally seize the vehicle until the fine is paid - sometimes many thousands of pounds levied especially in the case of lorries. The vehicle remains the property of Customs and Excise until the fine is paid.

There is a way of separating the dye from red, there was a couple of guys near me done for it a few years ago. The police thought there'd been a massacre until the red substance was tested that was dug into a field!

We've got gallons of the stuff as well but it's not worth aking the risk, my luck is that as soon as the smallest drop goes into my fuel tank they'll pull me!

I got pulled last year on my bike by C+E who wanted to dip my tank for red. He wasn't impressed when we all fell about laughing after i joked 'I haven't run it on red for a while'! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

The standard way of removing it (or most of it) is by mixing with Fullers Earth and filtering it. All that does is make it less apparent to a cursory check with a 'dip test'. It will never fool the Customs and Excise people in their van as they use a chemical test.
