Front end noise

Recently had the 36000 km service done at a non dealer LR specialist. They confirmed a 'clicking' noise in front driveline on near full lock. CV's immediately sprang to mind. I took it to the dealer who also confirmed the noise on LH and RH lock at slow speed as driveline associated and were somewhat concerned. It went in yesterday for an assessment and expecting the worst was surprised when they rang to say that the problem was the wheel nuts??!!!! apparently if they are over torqued with a rattlegun it affects the integral washer causing damage resulting in the clicking/grinding noise. The noise appears to have stopped after fixing the nuts so I guess they were on the money ; according to the dealer they have come across it before on LR but not FL2. I pointed out that the wheels were rotated by a LR dealer at the 24000 km service so perhaps all dealers should be made aware of the problem. Has anyone heard of this before?

The problem sounds familiar (from the forum) but the solution is unique! Sometimes it's the guys outside the "inner circle" who pick the issues straight away. Nice one to "Save" for later. Thanks.

Yes I read the posts about front end noise and the solutions seemed to centre around brake pad issues (which weren't resolved I think). Time will tell with this one Rolling Eyes 2009 TD4 SE, Alaska White, Ebony Leather, Sun Roof.

Yeah, my clicking noise seemed to be alleviated after replacing my front pads (with non-genuine ones) but it has now returned from what I can tell (I haven't been in an underground car-park where the noise was extremely obvious, but I have heard the same noise when turning with (any where near) full lock on in other situations).

I remember wandering whether it could have been movement in the wheel that caused the noise before I went down the brake pad route.

So what should I be doing to rectify my wheel nuts being too tight? When changing the pads, I did them up by hand, but I did put great a bit of tightness on them! I don't have a torque socket, just the wheel brace from the boot of the car.

Which dealer did you go to? Do you have a contact name/number in case I go to a dealer near me and get them to talk to your dealer?

Thanks for posting your findings.

Cheers,
Whytey 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

I went back to Lance Dixon LR where I bought the car. 03 9848 7777 and Tim Schoenemakers? is the service guy I dealt with. I'm unsure as to whether they replaced the washers or nuts but I know they lubricated them before fitting and torqued them by hand.

Thanks Rob.

I spoke to Tim just now and he was very helpful. Shame I live in Brisbane, because Melbourne is too far to take my car for a service Razz

For those that are interested, the wheel nuts on the FL2 have a washer built into the end of them, which press up against the wheel. Apparently, unless the nuts are done up to the correct specifications there can be movement of the wheel along the shaft, which when under the lateral load caused by having the wheels turned, will cause a clicking.

He suggested I take the wheels off, lube up the nuts (they use Innox or PowerLube [like WD40]) and then put the wheels back on using a torque wrench set between 113 and 153Nm (he recommended about 120Nm).

I am about to be away from my car for three days, but will try this when I get back on the weekend.

Thanks again,

unlucky you live in brisbane it would seem.

The dealer replaced both front drive shafts before i worked out it was the wheel nuts. Shocked

The noise always seems to return, but is a good reminder that the tyres are due for rotation.

As for the other brake related noise...... If only that was as easy to fix Rolling Eyes

Hi nosliwedaw,

Wow, you have been around these forums a while!

I am a little confused by your comments. Are you confirming that you also have the same problems with the clicking wheels and get relief by adjusting the tightness of the wheel nuts? Are you saying LR tried swapping the drive shafts to fix the problem?

Can I ask which dealer you visit in Brisbane?

I still haven't borrowed that torque wrench to do up my wheel nuts but I haven't driven the car this week so I am not in too much of a hurry. I must admit that the noise was gone after taking the wheels off the replace the brake pads, but it returned within about 2000kms.

Cheers,
Whytey 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Time flies when your having fun it seems.

Yes, I have the same clicking noise. It started at about 20k from memory. The dealer I was using at the time(Southside Land Rover) was unable to pin the issue down, electing to replace the RH side drive shaft.
This of course cured the noise as one would imagine they remove an refit the wheel to perform the task.

By the time I went through the whole inspection, wait for parts, fit parts saga for the passenger side I had it worked out but let them go ahead and replace the passenger side anyway.

2000k's seems to be when the noise starts to return, however I have never tried any lubricant or used a torque wrench so far. By 5000k they are getting loud and I use that as my motivation to rotate the tyres. I suspect that a replacement set of wheel nuts would do the trick, but I can only imagine what they are worth.

Service wise I can recommend Toowoomba(same travel time for me in peak hour), and now that I am out of warranty I am using MR automotive at redcliffe. Very inconvenient, but worth it. They are also a fair bit cheaper.

Cheers.

So, this weekend I took all four wheels off, gave them a good clean to remove all the brake dust, lubed the wheel nuts and put them back on with a torque wrench.

I noticed the washers on the wheel nuts were very rough when spun but they seemed to be much better after spraying some liquid grease stuff on them.

I did them up to about 130Nm and it seems to have done the trick. No more clicky clicky in the underground car parks which is fantastic.

I am now left wandering how long it will last. If this happens too often I will have to buy my own torque wrench rather than borrow one all the time Smile 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Interesting! I have a very silmilar sounding 'clicking' problem. To be honest, I'd never realised it was only happening when I was turning - But I had pinned it down to being in 2nd gear, revs between 900 and 1900 RPM and only when acelerating...
It's done it for about 2500 miles, having done 63000 miles in total, and I've finally taken it into the dealer. They reported the sound was coming from the rear offside brakes. I was suprised to hear that because I'd assumed it was something transmission related, but they know best. Anyway, the dealer reports that the park brake shoes, need replacing "totally ceased etc" (this may explain the poor performance of the hand brake, I've always had to pull it hard to engage) they also want to replace the discs and pads and the brake cables (one of which they say in extremely worn). I replaced the pads only a few months ago, so I think I might be asking to see the ones they remove - or is it good form to replace both discs and pads at the same?. I've never had to change discs, only pads so I've never given it much thought...
I'm in two minds whether they are just blaming the the clicking noise on the (geniune) brake problem, because they don't really know what the cause is?? Now I've read about the wheels being a possible issue, it kind of makes more sense to me - I had the front tyres changed about 10 days before the clicking noise started!!! Wish I'd read this first!!

Welcome rimmat,

I am no mechanical expert, but LR did seem to jump at possible problems with the car when responding to my reports of clicking. I can guarantee that for the problem I had, which was definitely front wheels and completely obvious when turning, the solution has been to tighten the wheel nuts to the correct torque.

Best of luck,
Whytey 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Have posted a potential fix if you have this issue that Lyntons on the Gold Coast fixed for me here http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic5866-15.html
