Fault record - Does it store details of Warnings?

All,

You can see info around the ongoing saga of my car losing water on my other post.

I'm keen to ascertain whether this was a fault before I took the car as it was an ex demo and had done a few thousand miles and whether the dealer sold me the car knowing there was a problem.

Can anyone tell me whether the computer in the Frelander stores details of every warning that comes up as I would be keen to ascertain via this the number of warnings that had come up before I took it.

Clearly this would put me in a very strong position in achieving a satisfactory outcome if I can prove this.

We are led to believe that the system records all warnings so when plugged into the diagnostic it can advise the monkey,....sorry, mechanic, sorry,....engineer what issues have arisen....hasn't helped me though!!! On a similar note I also was led to believe the cars have a data recorder for speed etc, alike to a black box on a plane...is this correct and if so how long is the info stored, can it be used in defence of speeding tickets on poorly calibrated speed cameras???? Not that have a need as yet Bow down Bow down ??

Oh no no, it's Technician these days!!! Whistle

Like most vehicle/engine controllers it should have an area assigned it its memory for saving errors in, but it depednent on the manufacturers desire it may not save every error, only those considered serious or that have come up multiple times. The way in which the error is saved probably also depends on how aware you are made of the problem through the driver display.

An ECU in a car will not have enough memory to record extended amounts of data such as speed against a time stamp unfortunately for you Carl.

It certainly did on my new jaguar ! The dealer told me the time and date and speed i had exceeded when it was new ! I had cracked it along in exces of 130mph and it was all logged in the ECU !
The only thing it didnt have wasthe GPS location thankfully Very Happy

If there has been a waranty repair logged it should be on the dealers computer?? I'm not sure if being ex demo means it might of escaped this, but anything that requires landrover repairs should be on it. Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Yes it does store warnings, when my towbar fitter plugged in for the software upgrade he mentioned some non essential warnings were in the ECU and the car was only a few weeks old.

Also there is a 'black box' of sorts, in the manual it states " Event data recorders are capable of collecting and storing data during a crash or near-crash event. The module will record information on how many occupants and the vehicle itself.
a) Whether seat belts were buckled.
b) How far, if at all, the driver was pressing the accelerator and/or the brake pedal.
c) How fast the vehicle was travelling.
d) Where the driver was positioning the steering wheel.

Land rover technicians do not access the info without obtaining consent but a court order made by an insurance company will reveal it.

Big brother is watching. Shocked
