Sunroof just went pop!

Just had a phone call from the other half. Whilst sitting at traffic lights the sun roof just smashed into pieces. No moving traffic around or yobs throwing stones. It was only because the sun visor was pulled across the occupants weren't covered in glass.

Has anyone known this happen before???

Help

Thats a first for me to hear of this happening, without been struck Shocked

was there and loud bang, maybe from a stone been thrown up just before or anything?

could have been chipped from a previous stone and gone due to that

Hope it sorted soon and doesn't rain, is it covered on the glass cover of your policy or the insurance side, not sure on sunroofs Confused Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

There was a bang as the thing went. Car wasn't moving at the time, who knows what caused it... Getting it into dealer before the rain comes.

I think a couple of members of the D3 site had this happen to them as well.

I had a screen go many moons ago before they were all laminated, it just popped for no real reason, for quite a few minutes prior to this I could here this crackling sound, sounded like ice cracking, this went on for 2 or 3 miles then it just popped. No other vehicles around, never did find out the reason.

Its Posible that one of the runners got stuck in the guides and caused the glass to try and twist which would cause it to shatter with a loud bang

Shocked

The sunroof was closed at the time and hadn't been opened for a day or so, so not sure if it could have twisted.

The car is in the local dealer now and we are awaiting news of cost etc. At least it didn't rain.

I have heard of this happening on another make of car. I can't remember what the cause was though.

Let us know what the dealer says, as this could be worrying for some of us. Confused Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

It can happen on a windscreen if a rogue spot weld around the glass body aperture has a bit flash of metal sticking up or out that was never clean off, then this can put pressure on the glass as the body flexs or reacts to temperture change that can eventually cause it to crack on a laminated or shatter in the case of a toughened glass.

No news yet.

I got the call to say the sunroof had smashed about 15 minutes after speaking to Nick to order some roof rails and cross bars for the Freelander.

It may turn out to be quite an expensive day! Big Cry

I don't know yet... I rang LRA when it happened and they sent the AA to clear up the broken glass and take it to the dealer. At this point they are checking to see if it is a fault with the runners etc.

There didn't appear to be anyone near the car and it was a distance from moving traffic when it smashed. No stones or whatever fell into the car and couldn't see anything which may have bounced off. Hadn't noticed any chips etc when last washed.

More worryingly... my daughters boyfriend has FL2 owning aunt, and apparently her sunroof smashed a few weeks ago. (I'll ask him for more details next time I see him).
