Could it just be a characteristic hum from a different tyre tread pattern? |

I wondered about the turbo but it doesn't sound much like a turbo whistle. 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone 1992 RR VogueSE- converted to autogas-gone 2000 FL1 3dr (wife's) 1996 Disco 1 300 Tdi(gone) 2007 FL2 TD4 GS auto (gone) MY 2011 SD4 HSE Automatic |

Thanks but it definitely isn't tyre noise. Colin 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone 1992 RR VogueSE- converted to autogas-gone 2000 FL1 3dr (wife's) 1996 Disco 1 300 Tdi(gone) 2007 FL2 TD4 GS auto (gone) MY 2011 SD4 HSE Automatic |

You can get a whine from a worn aux belt tensioner. Sounds similar to the noise the steering pump makes on its way out. Mine was quite loud though, as I recall (that was on the 07 GS, only noticed it after I'd had the steering done on extended warranty. I then found the warranty didn't cover the tensioner.) when my wrangler tyres got low the noise/hum they made convinced me my diff was humming, ive been in the trade for years and it nearly caught me out,so as someone else has mentioned don't dismiss tyre noise. |

Thanks Past Master, that sounds quite feasible and a good place to start. Colin 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone 1992 RR VogueSE- converted to autogas-gone 2000 FL1 3dr (wife's) 1996 Disco 1 300 Tdi(gone) 2007 FL2 TD4 GS auto (gone) MY 2011 SD4 HSE Automatic |

My aux belt tensioner when that started to go on my last FL2 at around 50000 miles made a clicking noise rather than a whine.

No mine was definitely a whine. Certainly it's a place to start, especially if as you say it varies with engine speed. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Hi, just an hour ago i was reterning from a weekend to the country from the country road which is full of turns at 30- 45 mph on my 2007 td4. Suddenly on a close turn i hear a whinning noise from the engine or gearbox while throttle. On a straight i put neutral (auto gearbox) with approximately 80 km per hour and start pushing the throttle pedal until 3000rpm but nothing, so now iknow that the noise isn't either from the engine or from the gearbox. So i started pressing the throtle pedan while steering and a loud differential noise started. To conclude i can surrely say that the noise appears only while pressinh the throtlle at corners.

Just talk to the phone with the dealers technisian. In Athens the dealer have 24h line. He gave instructions in order to identify the noise sourse. Finally we saw that come from the steering pump and more specific becsuse the filter of the steering pump needs cleaning or replacement. He hopes that because it is early i will not need pump replacement.

gasteratos, i was warned against trying to clean the filter as they can disintigrate and last thing you want is minute bits of plastic floating around the system, new reservoir only cost me £26 |

My mistake. He told me that it is propably the filter, and that he will replace the fluid after cleaning the circuit. Propably ( and you are right) thetank will be replaced as well.
