Dont let it get that dirty over winter!! Autoglym products very good for that! Cheaper on amazon tho! Mine is always kept clean through winter, even tho it does over 2000 miles a month!

I dont let my car get too dirty, but the preparation stages prior to polishing and waxing are needed to prevent inflicting damage to the paintwork and making the car look even better Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Mine is also kept clean throughout winter. But it's only regular washing.
The paint is probably full of all sorts of crap. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Nick,
Will do. Thank you.
Gave my paintwork the full treatment before the winter, clay/polish/wax.
Washed it every time it got dirty, and yet .....
Used a small piece of clay today on the tailgate today and was shocked to find what was on it. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Yes, spray on , sponge around and it turns purple when dissolving the iron or organic contaminates, leaving a lot less to get with the clay bar

Rinse well before claying though Thumbs Up

Agree with Nick it’s all in the prep, couldn’t believe it when I first clayed the car, the amount of muck it took off was surprising, leaving the surface super smooth and ready to polish and wax. I reckon I will probably clay the car about 3 time this year, once after winter , them summer, and the just as the weather turns in the autumn

Nick, where did you get the Iron X from as I might give it a go

So what do I wash the car with first to remove the wax that is already on it, so I can star afresh as it were, I have heard of using dishwasher tablets is that right ?
Can anybody give me a quick summary of stages or is it just wash, iron-x, clay bar, polish, wax ?

Don't use dishwasher tablets, they are powder and gritty and will scratch the paintwork

Things like fairy liquid can help, or an all purpose liquid cleaner like tesco daisy APC added to the 1st wash solution

I normally just wash, rinse, leave a little, iron x, rinse very well again, clay, wash, rinse and dry, polish, wax, wax again
12 to 24 hours after for a even covering

If I wasn't using iron x, at that stage I would de-tar with tardis Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
