Filming whilst off roading

As per my post in the UK section: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic8732.html

I am planning on a bit of light off roading. I doubt I can find someone to ride shotgun so I am wondering about filming it. Having looked at the dashboard there doesn't seem to be any suitable place to secure a camcorder and even if there was I guess the bouncing around on the rough surface would dislodge the camcorder.

Have you guys done any filming off road without a co-pilot and if so, how did you manage it?

Any thoughts on securing the camcorder? (short of superglue Laughing ) LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Not sure if there is anywhere on a Freelander 2 dash to mount one but I have a Jessops combined table top tripod and G clamp that works well on in both the Defender and the FFRR................ and was only £12.99. I mount a cheap Fuji camera on it rather than a video camera and have a 2Gb memory card in the camera so can get about 2 hours of video if the battery holds out and I use the lowest resolution How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Just searched the Jessops website and they don't have the G clamp version any more but this might be of interest
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/produc...cm_vc=PPZ1

There is this beefier version too http://www.jessops.com/online.store/produc...cm_vc=PPZ1
Going by the blurb it should be well up to the job of filming inside a Freely2 offroad ..........

This industrial strength suction cup mount can stay attached to surfaces at speeds of up to at least 200mph and is that which is found supplied with the HD Hero Motorsports.

This mount is very strong but is not designed for high impact sports such as surfing or snowboarding.

Just remember not to try surfing or snowboarding in your Freelander and you will be OK at up to 200mph........ How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

The camcorder I have is a Panasonic Mini-DV, NVDS60. Quite old now but still good picture quality and quite compact.

It's either that or use the iphone 4. Which I suspect will definitely need a co-pilot. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Israel 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Zermatt Silver

I have mounted a camera on the headrest, pull the headrest right up and use a camera mount and attach! Very solid and hardly any movement! This is what I have used:

http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/hague_sc3_clamp.htm

Can also be used by clamping to exterior of vehicle, as used on motoring programs!

If you have something like a flip or even just using a standard compact to film your movie you could strap it to the sun viser using rubber bands.. I've seen a few films on Utube done this way and it gives a pretty good angle. Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

A competition mount would possibly secure to headrest legs.

ALWAYS fit a check strap, a good cable tie or cord, does not need to be tight, but enough to stop it flying about if mount fails.

I have seen (more than once) the damage a flying camcorder can do to a top range crash helmet.
Most now use a recorder firmly bolted to floor or in boot using a mini camera. Mandatory for International and WRC events. All FL2's (3) Gone

Here you go Doc, the Suction ones are probably the best to get close front shots:

The Doctor, we use these for work, good quality recording straight to an SD card, we use an 8 Gig card on the lowest quality and will take about 14 hours of filming before is starts to overwrite. on the top quality about 2 to 3 hours recording, you can set it to record in in 3, 5 or 10 minute sections and you can take a still photo also, works in darkness should you need it and the camera itself is no bigger than a fag packet. Wired through the ignition it will auto start and shutdown 2 minutes after the ignition is turned off or you can use the internal battery which is like the battery in a mobile phone. Easily mounted by a sucker on the screen. Thumbs Up

I use an incar camera mounted above the interior mirror all the time, gets great shots and records hours of film.cost me less to buy than my excess and can be used as eveidence in an accident.

I also hired an SUV in America and drove for over 4000 miles in a month and recorded the whole trip on one 16g SD card

I did a project for someone that involved having an SLR on the dash taking pics every few seconds. I found that mounting it on the front of the dash mounted speaker with plenty of blutac did the trick Thumbs Up

P.s, if you're mounting it that close to screen, turn AF off, as if you have a heated screen or just get crap on it, you'll find that it focuses on the screen rather than beyond! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
