The lack of Stornoway grey will be a sales nightmare every other FL2 you see is Stornoway Grey, but they will never become rare, almost as common and boring as black. Twisted Evil lights blue touch paper and retires to a safe distance. SD4 Sport LE Firenze Red - no options or modifications yet, but it's early days.

Not being a 'paint man', what happens in the future at a body shop? where for instance a car panel needs re-spraying. Are colours bought in from manufacturers or are colours 'mix and match' on site?

If it's not a bad taste wind up, then I daresay the colours could soon be produced outside Japan.

Lets not forget the victims in all this please.

They have a load of different colours which they use - they put your paint code/name into the computer and out spits the mixing ratio Thumbs Up

What's the problem chaps............

PPG Industries (Automotive Division) are the world's largest OEM Car Paint producer in the world. Their production facilities are based strategically very close to their raw material needs, and they have no car paint operations in Japan. HQ is in the USA with 3 paint plants, in Mexio, Brazil, China, Germany plus Italyx2, Spainx2, and South Koreax2. If you've any questions re your "Blacks" why not ring Cynthia on 001 818 362 6711 - she's the VP OEM Automotive. I'm sure she'll send you a free sample of black. Wink

PPG Industries are coating specialists for all forms of transportation and surfaces. Diverse they are, for example if you wear contact lenses they could well contain a PPG coating.

Now sit back and relax safe in the knowledge that a) your black FL2 will still roll off the line in Halewood, and that b) I will not be specifying black for any car purchase.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Rimini Red

According to the following, copied from CoachFinish,

Its all to do with a magic metallic additive. Sad to see the plant is so close to the nuclear melt down, puts our own minor worries in perspective....
DPA

Sunday, March 27th, 2011 01:21:00

DARMSTADT, Germany: Japan’s earthquake and nuclear disaster has knocked out the entire world supply of a popular metallic additive to automotive paint, the manufacturer, Merck of Germany, said Saturday.

Merck’s product, Xirallic, an enhanced aluminium oxide, is added to pigment and supplied to paint companies in a range of colours that go by names such as solaris red, stellar green and cosmic turquoise because of their cold, metallic glow.

The world’s only Xirallic plant is located 45 kilometers from the Fukushima nuclear power station. People living within 20 kilometers of the burned plant must leave, and within 30 kilometers are advised to evacuate.

Merck spokesman Gangolf Schrimpf said at Darmstadt in Germany that160 plant staff and their families had been relocated to safer places and it was unclear when the plant, which was damaged by the earthquake, could resume production.

He could not say what makes of car use Xirallic. Upgraded to an ex demo, 7 mth old, Rimini Red/Ebony Napoli Auto HSE on 28th Jan 2011, added roof rails, mudflaps and side strips.
Gone - A great 57 Plate, Auto SE, Bought Feb 2009, Roof Rails and Mudflaps added on purchase. Blue colour, anything but drug dealer black.....

Gutted, only the drab colours left.
Seriously considering not ordering on Wednesday, don't want a car for four years in a colour I am not happy with.

The German's - always preaching to the world about the ultimate driving machine that Bob Marley & the Wailers drove, and now putting the wind up some folks because their plant is incapacitated. That Gangolf (or should that be "Gandalf" as this is a bit of exaggerated corporate spin/story telling) Schrimpf bleating because their product Xirallic is on hold. For how long......

Aluminium Oxide Al2O3 the raw base of the coating Merck's Xirallic product is produced all over the world so plenty of corporates can supply that (remember the Hungarian sludge disaster last year in Devecser that flooded into the Danube) and other paint chemists other than Merck will replicate if the auto industry demands it.

Order your BLACK Fl2 taztastic - don't let that gangly chap spoil your fun.
