Not giving away my age but when I had my first car (a side valve Morris Oxford) i got a few pence change from £1 when buying 4 yes FOUR gallons (18.2 litres) and 1 pint of oil. Oil consumption was about 100-150 miles per pint. Works out at 22p per gallon or just under 5p per litre for petrol.
Manufacturers would not consider oil consumption excessive unless it used more than 1 pint in 250 miles. This was the warranty guidline.

I used to keep a ten bob note (50p) in my glove box for emergency petrol - more than enough for 2 gallons (9 litres). Those were the days Very Happy 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone

I used to nick empty Newcastle Brown bottles from the back of the student bar and take them down the off-licence for a "refund". Petrol was about a half a crown a gallon, and you got sixpence a bottle. Thumbs Up

A mate of my Dads used to do a lot of business in Holland infact he had a light aeroplane to get there in. He would buy flip-top grolsch bottles, fly them home and then get more for the empty bottle in his local offy than he paid for the beer in Holland Laughing At work

to breach £100 you have to be stupidly low on fuel (enough set the engine into slo-mode) and even then you have to fill up at BP Wetherby at rip off prices Confused At work

I knew a chap once who proudly proclaimed that he only put a Fiver's worth of fuel in his tank whenever he went for fuel. He said he didn't want a thief to joy ride on a full tank of fuel. I did not understand his logic then and I don't now. Why inconvenience yourself so often on the off-chance that some scum might - just might - one day steal your car. I wonder how much he puts in at today's price per gallon.

Fill up and be done with it, and get on with being positive about life.
