France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Stornoway Grey

I have had two automatic cars, A Mercedes C Class and a Toyota Prius Mr. Green , that did not have a 'handbrake', both had a foot operated 'parking brake'. Neither were suitible for use at traffic lights.

I have to differ - I had a manual Mercedes with the foot operated parking brake but the release was on a hand control. I used it in exactly the same fashion as a hand parking brake. It was a constant source of amusement to watch strangers try and drive it as it usually resulted in a "your clutch is as solid as a rock mate!" from them.

One thing I've not seen mentioned in this thread is what I was told was the main reason for not sitting at stop with the foot brake applied (nothing to do with bulbs, most cars have three brake bulbs and the chances of them all failing at the same time is remote and we all check them before every trip don't we?). After pulling up to a stop the disks are nice and hot and sitting with the pads in contact with a part of the disk would cause uneven cooling and increase the possibility of disk warp.

I've no idea if it's true or maybe doesn't apply to modern ventilated disks with modern materials but it makes some sense to me.

Irrespective of the box for me it's stop, parking brake, neutral and relax. To resume, select gear, check gear and mirrors then parking brake off and pull away for any stop of any more than an anticipated 4 or 5 seconds.

I've driven a selection of gearboxes over the years both auto and manual with many years on HGV vehicles, again both auto and manual. On more than one occasion I have selected reverse in error but unless the car behind is literally a couple of centimetres away I've realised long before I've gone that far back.

Just some opinion that may or may not be of value.

Andrew

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Santorini Black

Well I picked up the new Freelander on saturday.

So far I am loving the automatic gearbox. Seems very refined, hardly notice gear changes under normal driving. Will take a bit of practice to learn the best way to drive it when wanting to make more rapid progress though.

I haven't even found myself going for the clutch yet lol. Do sometimes find myself reaching for the gear lever when approaching the odd roundabout or junction! Laughing

Also loving the SE spec over my old XS, just subtle but appreciable (to me anyway) differences.

Sat-nav seems ok too. Perhaps not quite as good as a TomTom but perfectly servicable for the amount I use it. Just got to find a good price for some up to date maps.

OK you've clawed a bit of dignity back with the 4 LR's Trev Thumbs Up

Sorry I've been away for a while.

Anyone see the top gear where clarkson followed a Prius round the track in an M3, and the M3 was more economical?

Also hybrid cars need lots of nasty stuff mined for the batteries (Involving these http://www.uk.cat.com/cmms/18093014?x=7) then it's all shipped half way round the world on the most polluting vehicles in the world (ships), then because they're Japanese need putting back on another big ship to be steamed back over almost the same route as they just travelled to come to Britain.

However, because environmentalist, the Brussels lot and also the government never went to school they're completely ignorant towards this fact and keep trying the brainwash people (and the majority it works unfortunately) that the little smell coming out the back of your car is what's making the earth warm up (which is proven to be a naturally occuring event anyway Evil or Very Mad )

The last time someone waged war on a group of people like this there was a 5 year fight... Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I'm not going to get drawn into an off-topic debate about hybrid cars. But the Prius was an interesting car to have for a while. I'll leave it at that Very Happy

Can't think why no-one has mentioned this, but the auto box holds onto gears a little too long for my liking..affecting fuel consumption quite a bit; especially when cold.
I sometimes drive the command shift by pushing it up the gears earlier than the auto box would and it keeps the revs down and the comsumption up a touch.
You still get the take off if you need it due to the torque since the engine is very flexible.
Very nice to have one on motorway or longer journey's too.
I prefer it to my manual boxes I previously had.

^ Not sure what year your Freely is but the new ones don't hold on to the gears a little too long, I noticed the torque is stronger lower down on mine maybe because the variable vane geometry has been modified, also there may be a software update available!
Driven around town and country roads with a light throttle mine stays around the 1750rpm mark, any lower and the loading would be bad for the turbo.

See also this thread where the OP is concerned about NOT changing up, with the engine 'labouring':

<snip> I never have any idea what gear it is in - it always finds the right one though. Mine seems to favour a gear that means the engine is at about 1800 revs when driving with the flow of traffic.
